Memphis- The Beverly and Sam Ross Gallery at Christian Brothers University (CBU) is proud to announce the exhibit “Ode to Lonerock” featuring the artwork of Samuel Nichols beginning February 24 through April 13. An opening reception will be held on Friday, February 24, 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the gallery on the lower level of Plough Memorial Library.
Employing his lifelong connection with art, Nichols’ exhibit is inspired by the beauty he beheld while on a family journey to the West. “With this exhibition, ‘Ode to Lonerock,’ I pay tribute to those sons and daughters of the westward movement who have played a part in my own maturity, my own enrichment,” stated Nichols “impressed by their determination to not only survive but to reveal a way of life from which we could all benefit.” His love for the rural parts of the country and the experiences he gained became the underlying subject of this collection. “Lonerock was thus, a learning experience where I became Builder, Hunter, Fireman, two-term Mayor… and, I believe, a better Artist and Person,” further notes Nichols.
Nichols is a former Art/Creative Director for Jantzen Inc, a sportswear company in Portland, OR where he won various accolades for his work at the San Francisco Art Directors Show. He has exhibited in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Scottsdale, Portland and Memphis. This is his second exhibition in the Beverly and Sam Ross Gallery. Previously, Nichols studied at the Memphis Academy of Arts and the Art Center of Los Angeles.
In addition, the foyer of the gallery will be displaying photography by the Memphis Camera Club.
