Memphis Urban Fellows Program

The MUFP is a year-round initiative that offers local college students the opportunity to intern with various divisions of the City of Memphis Government. Our mission is to develop the City of Memphis leaders and change agents of tomorrow by enhancing the interaction of area college students with the City. This is an unpaid internship with an opportunity to gain experience and greatly expand your network while earning college credit hours. The Urban Fellows interns complete projects proposed by division directors, which has a twofold benefit: the City of Memphis gets assistance and input on the pressing issues facing government and the Urban Fellows get firsthand experience in helping shape a more improved and efficient government. Past projects have included advice from students on the Project Management of the Administrative Professionals Day Program to the Cities of Service (onememphis.org) for Memphis.

Since 2011, over 100 students from various educational institutions have interned as an Urban Fellow in the City of Memphis Government Divisions. A diverse population of students have been mentored by executives in City Government.

CBU CareerLinX Recruitment System Q&A

CareerLinx_shortI see “CareerLinX” mentioned in this newsletter all the time.  What IS that exactly?

CareerLinX is the recruitment system software used by CBU Career Services.  First used by CBU in 2009 (formerly called “NaceLink”), this system allows CBU students and alumni to view jobs, internships, and other opportunities posted by local and national employers!  Most jobs are posted by employers who we’ve worked with for years, and who are specifically looking for a CBU student or alumnus to fit the bill!

There are lots of other things you can do with CareerLinX, too (load resumes and cover letters, RSVP to workshops, etc.), but the main goal is to help you more easily interface with recruiters who are looking for someone just like you!

Do I already have an account?

If you were enrolled at the beginning of the year, then yes, you should already have an account!  All current students automatically get an account as in-coming freshmen…and it lasts in perpetuity!   So if you missed the “System Welcome” message that was sent with your username and password, your account is still waiting for you!

If you’re an alumnus, or a new student who still needs an account, then you can sign up for an account at any time.  You can set your username and password to whatever you prefer (neither your CBU email nor your “899″ number are required as part of registration.)

How do I log in to CareerLinX?

Easy!  Just click here.  If you’ve not used your account before now, then your default username is your CBU email address.  Just keep in mind that your default password is NOT the same as your CBU email password.  CareerLinX is a stand-alone system (not part of your email, or Banner, or MyCBU), so the initial password is different from any others you may use.  If you already have an account, just use the “forgot password” link to reset it.  You can then change it to whatever you want!

What is the first thing I should do when I’m logged in?

As mentioned above, there are a lot of things you can do with CareerLinX.  But the first thing you’ll want to do is update your profile in the “profile” tab.  You can share as much or as little information as you want, but there are a few very important things to keep current…such as your major, your class year, and your anticipated graduation date.  These elements are the objective criteria that can effect your ability to view and/or apply for certain jobs, so be sure to update them at least once every semester…keeping that info current is VERY important.

Once you update your profile, we encourage you to explore all the other things you can do with CareerLinX.  If you have any questions or get stuck at any point, don’t hesitate to contact Curt Rogers in Career Services:  crogers@cbu.edu.

chess10 Ways To Network Your Way To A New Job
From Careerealism

Getting a job can be a major challenge, especially if it is your first job or you’re over 50.

Think of the job market in your area and how many people will be applying for a job listed on an online job board or local newspaper. All applicants are your competitors for the prized job. How will you give yourself the best chance of success in finding a job? How do you stand out from the crowd? How can you get the inside running?

EVERY person you know could become your sponsor, supporter, and a referrer for the opportunity you want. Consider the following to help you network your way to a new job: Read More…

businesscardThe Non-Boring Way To Show Off Your Soft Skills In Your Job Search
From Forbes

Have you ever described yourself on your resume or in your cover letter as a “hard worker” with a “positive attitude” who is able to “learn quickly?” Let me guess—did your job application seem to disappear into the HR black hole? I can’t say I’m surprised.

Here’s why. While the prevalence of applicant tracking systems, which match up job applications with the skills listed in the job description, has grown, in the end there’s still a human doing the final screening. And humans don’t connect with a series of keywords—they connect with good stories.

In other words, don’t sell yourself short by just throwing in flat, overused words to describe your soft skills. Show them off in a more concrete way, and I guarantee you’ll have more success.  Here’s how to do it—in every aspect of your job search.  Read more…

talking14 Interview Questions That Are Designed To Trick You
From AOL Careers

Savvy hiring managers have honed their ability to ask the least amount of questions yielding the greatest depth of information. One way they do this is by asking seemingly simple questions that get you to reveal information you may have been trying to conceal. In other words: questions designed to trick you.

“To uncover areas that may reflect inconsistencies, hiring managers sometimes ask these tricky questions,” says Tina Nicolai, executive career coach and founder of Resume Writers’ Ink.

Lynn Taylor, a national workplace expert and the author of “Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant: How to Manage Childish Boss Behavior and Thrive in Your Job,” says they use these queries to break through the “traditional interview noise and clutter,” and to get to the “raw you.”  Read More…
