choose_wiselyCBU 200: Career Planning is designed to prepare students for a successful career. Topics will focus on self-assessment, career exploration & decision-making, job & graduate school preparation, and professionalism. Through this course, you will earn academic credit while completing necessary activities (such as job search skills, resume & cover letter development, and career exploration) to accomplish your career goals.

Class will be held on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 to 1:50 during Fall 2014 (one credit hour).  There are only a few spots still available, so register for CBU 200 today!

An externship is a one-day to one-week shadowing experience in which students observe a “day in the life” of a professional CBU alumnus. Shadowing helps clarify your career goals, provides you with a realistic view of your career field, and puts you in touch with valuable networking contacts.

CBU CareerLinX Recruitment System Q&A

CareerLinx_shortI see “CareerLinX” mentioned in this newsletter all the time.  What IS that exactly?

CareerLinX is the recruitment system software used by CBU Career Services.  This system allows CBU students and alumni to view jobs, internships, and other opportunities posted by local and national employers, as well as on-campus intern and work-study positions!  Most jobs are posted by employers who we’ve worked with for years, and who are specifically looking for a CBU student or alumnus to fit the bill!

There are lots of other things you can do with CareerLinX, too (load resumes and cover letters, RSVP to workshops, etc.), but the main goal is to help you more easily interface with recruiters who are looking for someone just like you!

Do I already have an account?

If you were enrolled at the beginning of the year, then yes, you should already have an account under your CBU email address!  All current students automatically get an account as in-coming freshmen…and it lasts in perpetuity!   So if you missed the “System Welcome” message that was sent with your username and password, your account is still waiting for you!

If you’re an alumnus, or a new student who still needs an account, then you can sign up for an account at any time.  You can set your username and password to whatever you prefer.

How do I log in to CareerLinX?

Easy!  Just click here.  If you’ve not used your account before now, then your default username is your CBU email address.  Just keep in mind that your default password is NOT the same as your CBU email password.  CareerLinX is a stand-alone system (not part of your email, or Banner, or MyCBU), so the initial password is different from any others you may use.  If you already have an account, just use the “forgot password” link to reset it.  You can then change it to whatever you want!

What is the first thing I should do when I’m logged in?

As mentioned above, there are a lot of things you can do with CareerLinX.  But the first thing you’ll want to do is update your profile in the “profile” tab.  You can share as much or as little information as you want, but there are a few very important things to keep current…such as your major, your class year, and your anticipated graduation date.  These elements are the objective criteria that can effect your ability to view and/or apply for certain jobs, so be sure to update them at least once every semester…keeping that info current is VERY important.

hotjobsCBU has launched a pilot Campus Intern Program in a handful of departments across campus, including Career Services.  Other participating departments include Human Resources, the Plough Library, the Psychology Lab, the Art Studio, and Graduate Engineering.

Unlike our regular campus work-study program, these positions will require students to apply for, and interview for, each position that interests them.  These students “interns” will have greater responsibilities within each department, and will work approximately 10 hours per week.  Each position pays $9.25/hour.

Check Out Our New Digs!

Career Services OfficeFor the second time in as many summers, Career Services has relocated its offices…this time, to the newly renovated space in Buckman Hall!  We’re still unpacking a few boxes and putting things away, but we are open for business!  Stop by Buckman Hall, Suite 207, and say hello!  (We’re on the second floor, just to the left of the Montesi Room, and across the hall from the Academic Services office.)

Practice Test Day: Thursday, April 4th (Note Date Change)

practicetestOnce again this semester, in conjunction with Kaplan Testing Services, we will be offering the opportunity to take a practice version of one of several Graduate Admissions Tests (GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, DAT, OAT, PCAT).  Practice tests will be offered on Thursday, April 4th (note the date change from March 21st) beginning promptly at 1:00 pm.  Each test will take anywhere from 90 minutes to slightly over 3 hours, depending on the specific test, so make sure you are there on time at 1:00 pm, and can block off the entire afternoon to take the test.  (Otherwise your scoring will not be accurate.)  All tests are timed by section.

These tests are retired versions of the actual test administered in a written format, but they are scored just like the real thing (“essay” sections are not included, and some tests are slightly abbreviated versions).  You can get your answers back very quickly, and you get to keep your test booklet as a study guide after the test.  It’s a great opportunity to learn where you’re strong, and where you need more study.

It only costs $5.00, which you can bring with you on test day.  Room assignments will be posted on the first floor of Kenrick Hall on the day of the test.

To reserve your seat, sign in to your Nace-Link account, click the “Events” tab at the top of the page.  Then select which test you want to take, and hit the gray “RSVP” button at the bottom of the page.  Deadline to register is Wednesday, March 27th.  This is the only time this semester that we’ll be conducting the practice tests, so don’t miss this chance!
