Condolences

Gerry Papachristou, husband of Pat Papachristou (Economics) and father of Mark Papachristou (’97, MBA ’99) and Angela Papachristou (’07), had a massive stroke Saturday morning, May 11. According to the doctors, it happened very quickly, so he did not suffer. He died peacefully surrounded by family singing and praying early Sunday, May 12.

Two memorial services have been scheduled and the family hopes that members of the CBU Community will be able to come to one of them.

On Wednesday, May 15, there will be a memorial service at the Church of the Holy Apostles at 2:00 p.m., followed by a reception. The church is located in Collierville at 1380 Wolf River Blvd.(past its intersection with Houston Levee, St George’s High School).

On Thursday, May 16, there will be a Memorial mass at St. Patrick Church (4th and Linden) at 5:15 p.m., preceded by the Rosary at 4:45. There will be a reception in the Parish Life Center afterwards.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Patrick Food Ministry, Holy Apostles Outreach Committee, or the charity of your choice. Condolences may be sent in care of Campus Box 70.

CBU’s First White Coat Ceremony

The Physician Assistant Studies Program made CBU history on May 4 in the University Theater when it coated its first cohort, marking a rite of passage for the students from didactic classroom and lab instruction to practical clinical training. Baccalaureate Service
Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception (1695 Central), 7:00 p.m.
Students will meet at the Cathedral by 6:30 p.m. (Undergraduates: Wear Regalia only, Graduate students: Regalia and Hood. Please do not bring your cap.) Ruby R. Wharton, attorney and First Lady of the City of Memphis, is the keynote speaker and the 2013 recipient of the Bishop Carroll T. Dozier Award for Peace and Justice. A reception for graduates and guests will be held following the Baccalaureate Service in Marion Hall. Families will have the chance to take photos with their graduates.

Commencement Exercises

The ceremony begins promptly at 9:00 a.m. During the ceremony, the University will award an Honorary Doctor of Public Service to Mayors Mark H. Luttrell and A C Wharton Jr. in recognition of their lifelong commitment to the citizens of Memphis and Shelby County. Reception to follow in the Buckman Quadrangle.

Buccaneer outfielder Jarrett Jenkins (Business Administration ’14) has been named to the All-GSC First Team. Jenkins hit .336 with 27 runs, 16 stolen bases, 14 runs batted in, and seven doubles for the Bucs this season. He leads the team in batting average, on-base percentage, runs, hits, doubles, walks, stolen bases, outfield putouts, and outfield assists.

Lady Buc third baseman Marie Joiner (History ’14) has been named to the All-GSC First Team. Joiner led the GSC in batting average this year, hitting .429 with 57 hits, 11 doubles, 21 runs, seven steals, and 12 runs batted in. She led the Lady Bucs in hits, doubles, runs, stolen bases, batting average, and slugging percentage this season. She ranks first in the GSC and 45th in the nation in batting average, and she is sixth in the GSC in on-base percentage. She also ranks 20th in the nation in at-bats per strikeout, as she only strikes out once every 33 at-bats.

Dr. Pong Malasri (Packaging) has been invited to serve as guest-editor-in-chief for a special issue on “Transport Packaging: Theory & Practice” for the International Journal of Advanced Packaging Technology, a new open-access peer-reviewed e-journal. Dr. Asit Ray (Chemical Engineering), Dr. James Aflaki (Mechanical Engineering), Dr. Ali Pourhashemi (Chemical Engineering), and Larry Rutledge (CBU Certified Test Lab) are among the international editorial team of the issue. Joy Robertson (History ’13) has been accepted to the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, University of Memphis.

Dr. Eric Welch (Dean, School of Engineering), pictured above seated in the center, attended a conference of Catholic Engineering Deans in Seattle, April 29-30. There were sixteen engineering schools represented, including Marquette, Saint Louis University, Loyola, Notre Dame, Manhattan College and Gonzaga.

The CBU Honors Program won the school category in the at the On Location: MEMPHIS International Film & Music Festival with it’s short film, “Memphis Rocks: A Buccaneer Family Vacation.” Way to go, Buccaneer Family!

Petting and Burning Away Stress

Student Life offered a variety of exam-week stress relief methods last week, ranging from free breakfast late at night to free massages. Also on the stress-less schedule was a “Burn Away Some Stress Party” at the LLC fire pit attended by about 120 students who enjoyed free s’mores and marshmallows over the free fire, along with other free cookout food and drink. And then there were the dogs… not the hot dogs at the fire pit, but the Therapy Dogs. Those friendly, furry bundles of puppy love are guaranteed to lower blood pressure and heart rate and just make you smile and say “awwwwww…” Stress relief? Mission accomplished.

Trustees Honored for Service

The CBU Board of Trustees held its final full-membership meeting of the 2012-13 fiscal year on April 30 and paid tribute to five members who are ending their terms of service to the Board. Among the many accolades and reminiscences of Dr. Evelyn McDonald‘s 20+ years of service to CBU during her retirement party on May 2, the alumni of the Pi-Epsilon Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon presented her with a bench in her honor, soon to be placed in the vicinity of the Brother Tony Pisano Memorial. Methodist Hospice and CBU Honor Vets

As Memorial Day approaches, Methodist Hospice and Christian Brothers University will host a free community event honoring our veterans on Thursday, May 16 in the University Theater with a reception at 5:30 p.m. followed by a viewing at 6:30 p.m. of Honor Flight, a documentary about four living World War II veterans and a Midwest community coming together to give them the trip of a lifetime. Volunteers race against the clock to fly thousands of WWII veterans to Washington, DC to see the memorial constructed for them in 2004, nearly 60 years after their epic struggle.

Donations will be accepted to benefit the Methodist Hospice We Honor Vets program. As part of the We Honor Vets program, veterans at the Methodist Hospice are honored with special recognition consisting of a certificate thanking them for their service and a flag lapel pin.

CBU is a VA-Designated Yellow Ribbon University. This designation allows eligible veterans of the United States Armed Forces who qualifies for educational benefits under the Yellow Ribbon Program to apply for generous grants thereby, receiving an education from prestigious CBU without paying tuition or mandatory fees.

In addition, CBU is ranked among “Best for Vets: Business Schools 2013” by the Military Times. Out of the 100 schools responding to the first-ever national survey, CBU ranked 19 out of 62 selected by the Military Times for its master’s business programs that help veterans bridge their military skills to corporate America.

CBU TAPPI Student Chapter

The TAPPI Student Chapter at Christian Brothers University has completed its first year with various activities from TAPPI-CBU fundraising golf, fried-rice fundraising project, and participation in the 2013 TAPPI Student Summit in North Carolina. TAPPI (Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry) is the leading association for the worldwide pulp, paper, packaging, and converting industries and is the publisher of Paper360º and TAPPI JOURNAL. The Beverly and Sam Ross Gallery at CBU will be among the local galleries and museums participating in a joint area-wide exhibit “Celebrating Carroll Cloar” in honor of the late artist’s centennial. CBU’s exhibition of 26 drawings from the University’s permanent collection, “Crossing Place,” begins May 31 and runs through July 26. More >>>

Safe Zone Program

Coming this fall: The CBU Safe Zone Program will support LGBTQIA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning/queer, intersexed, and allied) students. Safe Zones provide spaces where LGBTQIA students can find support and information, free of judgment and hostility. Moreover, the Safe Zone Program aims to promote a campus environment where LGBTQIA students feel welcomed, affirmed, safe, and protected from harassment and homophobia. The Safe Zone Program will be housed in Student Life under the new Associate Vice President of Student Life. Safe Zone Ally training will be conducted in September for interested faculty and staff members who want their offices to serve as designated Safe Zones.
