We have put together a list of Frequently Asked Questions to help address some of the most common concerns students have about studying abroad. If you need more clarification or have questions that we haven't covered, please do not hesitate to get in touch!

Is it for me? 
Studying abroad is for everyone! There are many programs to choose from, regardless of major or language ability. One is right for you!
Why should I go abroad? 
Internationalize your resume and become a more competitive candidate in your profession, learn a language or improve existing language skills, explore a different culture firsthand, build self-confidence, globalize your perspective, satisfy your craving for adventure.
How much does it cost? 
The costs vary greatly from program to program, but the value students get from studying abroad is immeasurable! With careful planning and the selection of the right location, some programs are comparable to what you would normally pay for a semester of CBU. There are also a number of scholarships available from various agencies for special groups or studies. Exchange Programs are a great fit for a small budget as they permit you to apply your regular financial aid awards such as CBU scholarships, federal loans and grants to the cost of studying abroad.
Do I have to be fluent in another language to go abroad? 
Absolutely not! You can study in an English speaking country or choose a program designed to teach you a foreign language. There are also programs taught in English in non-English speaking countries.
When should I go? 
As soon as possible! Anyone, no matter what their year, can go on a travel/study trip. Most students who choose to go abroad for a whole semester do so during their junior year, but there is no reason why you can't go your sophomore or senior year. You must have at least sophomore standing and a 3.0 GPA to participate in semester-long study abroad at CBU.
Where should I go? 
Anywhere you want. There are programs in many countries on five continents. Where you go is entirely up to you and your interests, needs, and your financial circumstances. Through the Lasallian Consortium, study abroad opportunities are available around the globe!
How long do I stay?
 The length of programs varies widely. You can stay for as little as a few weeks or an entire year. The length of your stay is up to you and your academic advisor. The travel/study trips are 7-10 days long.
Where do I stay when I am there?
 Some universities abroad have student housing (dorms), but many students live in an apartment close to campus, recommended often by the International Office of the university they are visiting. On travel/study trips you usually stay at 3 star hotels arranged by the Study Abroad Office.
Are there opportunities to travel to other nearby areas while I'm studying abroad?
 Definitely! Especially if you are going to Europe, you will find that the train system can take you to all kinds of wonderful places. Oftentimes CBU students who are studying abroad in separate locations will visit one another over weekends and act as host and tour guide!
Do I get credit for it and will it delay my graduation? 
You definitely get credit for studying abroad, although the amount of credit depends on the specific program you choose. You work with your academic advisor, the Study Abroad Office, and the Registrar's Office to plan and have your course schedule approved before you go. That way, you know what credit will transfer back to CBU and what won't. It's possible that studying abroad could actually put you ahead of schedule! For example, some programs give you two years worth of a foreign language in one summer.
How do I get started? 
Re-visit the Study Abroad website listings to keep up with the available opportunities as we add new trips and programs frequently. Follow us on Facebook and take a look at our photo albums to have a better idea of what other students' experiences abroad are like. Also, we encourage you to schedule an appointment to come in and talk to us by e-mailing studyabroad@cbu.edu with your contact information. Talk to faculty, instructors or fellow students who have lived or studied abroad. Begin thinking about or researching countries or programs that interest you. Going abroad takes a little bit of planning, so its never too early to start!
