TEXT: Discrete and Combinatorial Mathematics, 4th edition by Grimaldi.
COURSE CONTENT: Discrete math is the study of objects or values which are ``separated'' from one another. (For example, the set of real numbers is not ``discrete'' while the set of integers is ``discrete.'') We will study sets, logic, counting methods, relations, graphs, functions and possibly codes.
Additionally, we will use this course to introduce some of the concepts in higher mathematics. Here, we will study some of the methods involved in proving mathematical concepts. We will not be proving difficult things, but studying how one proves (or disproves) a mathematical concept.
HOMEWORK:A list of suggested homework problems will be given for
each section covered in class. Every Friday, the homework which had
been assigned by the preceding Wednesday will be due. I will choose
five of these problems at random and grade them.
I will spend the first 5-10 minutes of each class answering
questions about the previous class day's homework. This could well
include problems which will later be graded so I encourage you to ASK
QUESTIONS. Home work will be
of your final grade.
TESTS: There will be three in-class exams, each exam worth 100
points, and a comprehensive final exam worth 100 points. I will not
curve your test grades. If you miss a test for any reason, you need
to notify me no later than the day
after the test to set up a time for a make-up. Each test and the
final are
of your grade.
PROJECTS: I strongly encourage students to work together when
studying mathematics (except on exams!) and to further this goal there
will be several group projects during the course of the semester.
These projects will be discussed at the time they are
assigned. Projects will count for
of your grade.
ATTENDANCE:Attendence is the responsibility of the student. I
will not take roll. However, quizzes cannot be made up, and exams will
be made up only in the case of an excellent excuse.
GRADING: 100-90%=A, 90-80%=B, 80-70%=C, 70-60%=D, 60% and below is an F.
SCHOLASTIC DISHONESTY WILL NOT BE TOLERATED! I expect students in this class to abide, fully and completely, with the Rhodes Honor Code. All work is to be completed with the honesty and integrity demanded by this code. If you have any specific questions as to what is or is not allowed on a particular assignment feel free to ask questions.
