| I was born in Pittsburgh PA in 1950.
My Dad was finishing his Masters in Biology (in the then-brand-new field
of Ecology) and my Mom was an RN. The family moved to Atlanta GA
where Dad worked for a publishing company. He started out selling and developing
biology, medical, and nursing books. By the way, Dad was the publisher
who worked with Gene Odum when Dr. Odum was writing his first ecology text.
(Years later I took some graduate courses from Dr. Odum.)
My Mom retired her nursing cap when I came along and my brother Bill was born in 1954. She kept the home organized and developed her interests in wildflowers, bird watching, and gardening. On summer vacations we visited Granddad in Phillippi WV and Grandma Lowe in Buckhanon WV. Dad's publishing career put him in NYC so the family moved to NJ for a year then to Nassau Co. Long Island NY (where I went to grade school and high school). Dad served as President of the Nature Conservancy. The "bedroom suburb" life has limitations for biologists. So, we escaped to a rustic cabin for weekends and for longer stays in the summer. This was at Lost Lake in Putnam Co. NY (no motor boats allowed). We loved "roughing it for fun"--we had electricity and running water (cold) but also an outhouse. My brother became an expert with a fishing rod and rowboat. I went to college in Holland MI, graduate school in Athens GA and then Clemson SC. Mom & Dad moved to the Poconos (Stroudsburg PA) when Dad started a new publishing company. Mom still lives in this house. Across the road there's a stream (stocked with trout) where Canada geese nest and there's an undeveloped ridge where turkeys, etc. thrive. Mom has a bit of trouble with deer munching her garden and the occasional bear who decides to eat the bird feed. Meanwhile, my brother went to college in Holland MI (yes, Hope College-and he was a biology major too). Bill later moved to Stroudsburg (after a bit of graduate school in wildlife biology) and started a chimney sweep business. Dad retired and Mom and Dad were able to travel more extensively (Costa Rica, Kenya, Portugal, Guatemala). Dad had cancer of the esophagus and died a few years ago. Mom enjoys traveling, gardening, birdwatching, and cooking (including the game Bill contributes). She looks after a couple of her elderly friends in town, keeps Bill's freezer stocked, and she loves to experiment with everything from ethnic cuisines to good old fashioned home cooking. Bill lives on several acres of land up on a mountain in a fixer-upper house he's rebuilding. He has recently completed remodelling the second floor and has added huge covered porches to the house. Indoors he has a collection of artwork with a wildlife theme and taxidermic mounts of bear, elk, and deer. He has a deer feeder in his back yard and enjoys taking his house trailer to state shooting matches. |
My brother Bill:
He's a chimney sweep and an outdoorsman. He really knows about wildlife biology. |
(Dec. 1981-now he has a cool beard.) |
I took the summer off before Sophomore year

| A few photos I took in the Galapagos: | |
Can you tell which is the male and which the female? I took the photo on Isla Espanola (Hood Is.), Galapagos, Ecuador 30 Nov. 1980. |
Yes, they nest in the bushes. Quite a scene as they maneuver with those webbed feet! I took the photo on Isla Genovesa (Tower Is.), Galapagos, Ecuador 27 Nov. 1980. |
These birds are so big they have to head into the wind (or jump off a nearby cliff) to take flight. I took the photo on Isla Espanola (Hood Is.), Galapagos, Ecuador 30 Nov. 1980. Here's a link to my Galapagos photos web page. |
