    • Biology faculty members provided a cake to help celebrate this momentous event in our cultural and scientific history.

  • Charles Robert Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, England on February 12, 1809.

  • On Monday, February 12, Beta Beta Beta, the Biology Honor Society sponsored the first ever Ape Olympic Biathalon in honor of Charles Darwin's 198th birthday anniversary.  The events included the following:
    • Introduction and a few facts about Darwin:  Dr. Eisen
    • Coconut Shot Put:  The Coconut Shot Put is very much like any other Shot Put competition, except you use a coconut.  Coconut shot put Winners: Thomas Turner and Dr. Mary Ogilvie.
    • Mate-calling contest from the landing on the 2nd floor of the Alfonso Dining Hall.  Judged on the basis of audibility and clarity. Men's Mating Call Contest Winner: Jeremy Armstrong

    • Video clips can be downloaded here(filesizes are ~10K each)
    • Thanks to Drs. John Varriano and Teri Mason for serving as judges (and shills) for the event, and to Rebecca Bastnagel for recording results.

    Fruit of the Coconut Palm (Cocos nucifera).   Botanically, a coconut is a simple dry fruit known as a fibrous drupe (not a true nut).Howler monkey They are the loudest animal in the New World and while their howl is not a piercing sound, it can travel for three miles through dense forest.Dr. Eisen whose ape ancestry is really quite distant :-)

    beta beta beta is a national biology honor society for undergraduates. 
    "Beta Beta Beta (TriBeta) is a society for students, particularly undergraduates, dedicated to improving the understanding and appreciation of biological study and extending boundaries of human knowledge through scientific research."
    • The CBU Chapter of beta beta beta also serves as a Biology Club welcoming interested students to participate in a variety of social and career related activities.  Dr. Ogilvie is the faculty advisor for BBB.
