Beta Beta Beta Fund Raiser for Uganda -- 10 November 2006
  • Beta Beta Beta, the biology honor society, would like to thank everyone who participated in their "Bowling for Uganda" bowl-a-thon on 10 November 2006. The event was a great success, raising money for Hope North, a camp for internally displaced people in Uganda.

  • Tri-Beta especially thanks Dr. Ogilvie and the 2006-07 chapter officers, who planned and coordinated the event.
  • Dr. Ogilvie reports:

  • That’s the Way the Bowling Ball Bounces
Bowling aficionados (faculty, students and alums) had their chance to show off a bit on Nov. 10 at Tri Beta’s 2nd annual Bowlathon for Hope North in Uganda.   Tri Beta (CBU’s honorary biological society) sponsored the Bowlathon in support of the Ugandan community which serves the living and educational needs of families displaced by an ongoing civil war.  Over the past several years, CBU students participating in the MHIRT (Minority Health International Research Training) program have spent summers at Hope North both helping and learning.
Nineteen teams of 5 bowlers representing all levels of prowess (or lack thereof) converged on the All-Star Lanes Bowling Lanes vying for the coveted title of “Best of the Bowling Bucs.”  There were 5 faculty/staff teams, 2 alum teams, and 12 student teams.  Taking first place and a hefty trophy was the science faculty/staff team, followed by Kappa Sigma in 2nd place and TKE in 3rd place. Although, much of the money pledged by sponsors is still out, at last count, over $800 has been collected for the Ugandan community.

Ending Poverty Through Enterprise:
Raising Funds for Hope North, an Internally Displaced People’s Camp in Uganda
  • Hope North is a remote village in Uganda and is commonly referred to as a self-sustainable internally displaced people’s camp, created as the result of a civil war in Uganda.  The Acholi people have been the targets of this war, in which their own children have been abducted by the “Lord’s Resistance Army” and then forced to kill their own kinfolk.  The U.N. and many other non-profit organizations have set up camps in Uganda in hopes of protecting many of the displaced Acholi people.  These camps are overcrowded and have been infiltrated by many diseases such as Typhoid, Malaria, and now most commonly Cholera. These are only a few of the numerous challenges that the villages face.
  • HOW CAN WE HELP?
    • Tri Beta held a campus-wide Bowl-A-Thon.  Several CBU student organizations and faculty members formed teams of five or six people.  Others supported the effort by donating or raising money.  Each team went head-to-head with the other clubs on campus in a fun evening of bowling for a good cause.  Trophies were awarded to the organizations that raised the most money and bowled the highest scores.

    • The fund raiser met the goal to raise $2000 in order to build a house for Hope North village in Uganda.  Organizers included:  Christie Spencer (Tri Beta President) and Jennifer Hendrick (Tri Beta Vice President).
