CBU has been awarded a grant of more than $900,000 from the the Fogarty International Center and the Office of Research on Minority Health and Health Disparities of the National Institutes of Health, designed to support research opportunities for minority students. 

This is the sixth consecutive year CBU has received the Minority Health International Research and Training (MHIRT) grant, which will be received in increments of more than $200,000 a year over a four-year period. 

Research projects address problems inherent to health care in minority and rural populations in the U.S. and in developing countries; CBU programs involve lab and health programs in Brazil and Uganda. 

Since the first grant was awarded in 2000 more than 40 students from CBU and several other colleges and universities in the Mid South and throughout the U.S. have participated in the project.

• CBU Beta Beta Beta Biology Honor Society is participating in the Multiple Sclerosis Society's annual "MS Walk" on Saturday, April 2, 2005. This is an annual fund-raiser event for the MS Society. 

There are three ways to participate in this worthy cause: (1) Participate in the walk, (2) Volunteer during the walk, and (3) Collect donations for the MS Society. 
• The walk will begin at 10 am on Mud Island, however it is best to arrive by 9:30 am to sign-in.  BBB is putting together 2 teams, one team of volunteers and one team of participants. • CBU Biology students and Bro. Edward Salgado are planning a trip to Haiti to work at a clinic for  Haiti Medical Missions of Memphis.   The Spring Break trip '05 volunteers from CBU will be Bro. Edward Salgado, Carrie McIvor, Manny Patel, Kelly Ward, Christen Gregory, Andrew Kovacs, and Chris Sage.
• The Spring Break trip plans are tentative, depending on the political situation in Haiti.  The Fall Break Trip was cancelled because of political unrest in Haiti (the U.S. State Dept. issued a travel warning). 
• Senior CBU Biology Majors may volunteer for a trip to Haiti during either Fall '05 or Spring '06 Break.  The number of expense paid openings is limited.  Contact Bro. • As a part of CBU's continuing institutional effectiveness efforts, the Office of Institutional Research & Effectiveness will be administering the Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency exam to all CBU day students who are Juniors now or who will be by the Spring. 
• The exam consists of four test modules and administration will commence at 1:00 on Thursday, January 13th.  It will last approximately one hour and forty-five minutes.
• Five dollars will be added to students' Buc cards in appreciation for their participation. However, students who do not take take the exam will not be allowed to register for Fall 2005 classes until the Freshmen register.

• Tom South, Director of Admissions for the University of Arkansas College of Medicine, will be visiting CBU to meet with students informally on Tuesday, November 16, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. in room S214.  Mr. South will also give a presentation in the senior research class at 1:00 in S214.  Dr. Fitzgerald invites any interested students to attend this session.

Medical School include Amy Fallon (Amy is now a medical resident in OB/GYN at UAMS), Keith Criner (Keith is now a medical resident in combined Med/Peds at UAMS), Gautham Gandhi (an M3), Jana Pierini, J. Christian Cash, and Ashleigh Frith (an M1).   We also have a CBU alum at U Ark. graduate school in Toxicology, Katie Fields.

An evening of mock interviews for any CBU Pre-Health major.  BBB matched student interviewees with medical professionals who will conduct one-on-one interviews with our students.  Health care professionals (physicians, dentists, etc.) who came to CBU to conduct the interviews include:

• 16-24 Oct. 2004   (Fall Break  Trip to Haiti  Cancelled)  Haiti Medical Missions of Memphis.

• CBU Biology Students are collecting items such as T-shirts, ballcaps, and toys for the Haitians.  Anything that you can donate would be appreciated.  Drop Off is in the Biology Resource Room (Room 213) of the Science Building.  (Monetary donations can be made to Haiti Medical Missions of Memphis).
• Because of political unrest in Haiti, the U.S. State Dept. has issued a travel warning.  Therefore Bro. Edward Salgado and the CBU Biology student volunteers will not be able to travel to Haiti for Fall Break 2004.  The group plans to travel to Haiti in early Jan. 2005.   Meanwhile, donations can still be accepted and they will be carried to Haiti by medical volunteers on subsequent trips on a space available basis.
