Beta Beta Beta Fund Raiser for Uganda
18 Nov. 2005
  • Beta Beta Beta, the biology honor society, would like to thank everyone who participated in their "Bowling for Uganda" bowl-a-thon on 18 November 2005. The event was a great success, raising money for Hope North, a camp for internally displaced people in Uganda. The winning teams in the bowl-a-thon were from Kappa Sigma, 1st place; Tau Kappa Epsilon, 2nd place; and the School of Science Faculty, 3rd place. Tri-Beta especially thanks vice president Jennifer Hendrick, who planned and coordinated the event, and treasurer Christina Brown, who provided invaluable support. Proceeds from the bowl-a-thon will go to build a house at Hope North, which will be called the "CBU Home" and have the names of all of the participating organizations and teams painted on the wall.

Ending Poverty Through Enterprise:
Raising Funds for Hope North, an Internally Displaced People’s Camp in Uganda
  • Hope North is a remote village in Uganda and is commonly referred to as a self-sustainable internally displaced people’s camp, created as the result of a civil war in Uganda.  The Acholi people have been the targets of this war, in which their own children have been abducted by the “Lord’s Resistance Army” and then forced to kill their own kinfolk.  The U.N. and many other non-profit organizations have set up camps in Uganda in hopes of protecting many of the displaced Acholi people.  These camps are overcrowded and have been infiltrated by many diseases such as Typhoid, Malaria, and now most commonly Cholera. These are only a few of the numerous challenges that the villages face.
  • HOW CAN WE HELP?
    • Tri Beta held a campus-wide Bowl-A-Thon.  Several CBU student organizations and faculty members formed teams of five or six people.  Others supported the effort by donating or raising money.  Each team went head-to-head with the other clubs on campus in a fun evening of bowling for a good cause.  Trophies were awarded to the organizations that bowled the highest scores.

    • The fund raiser met the goal to raise $2000 in order to build a house for Hope North village in Uganda.  Organizers included:  Christie Spencer (Tri Beta President) and Jennifer Hendrick (Tri Beta Vice President).
