Information for Volunteers
Haiti Medical Missions of Memphis
Volunteer Responsibilities
  • While working in Haiti on behalf of HMMOM, volunteers are expected to participate in a variety of activities which may include, but are not limited to: construction, painting, cooking, cleaning, medical and dental treatment to patients, making health-related presentations to children and adults and other activities as deemed necessary by the Executive Director, Mission Team Leader and/or Administrative Director.
  • In order to maintain the integrity of the program’s mission and ensure the success of future missions, HMMOM has developed the following key requirements for all mission volunteers:
    • The volunteer will report to the Executive Director and the Mission Team Leader or more immediate supervisors as designated by the Executive Director
    • The Executive Director (and appointed staff) has ultimate authority for all decisions concerning the operation of the clinic, medical decisions made on behalf of the mission, and any other issues related therein.
    • The Executive Director (and appointed staff members) has authority for decisions concerning emergencies, particularly illness of the volunteer necessitating hospitalization or evacuation to the United States, or danger to the volunteer in Haiti.
    • The Executive Director, Mission Team Leader and/or Administrative Director in Haiti has authority to terminate the volunteers time of service immediately should this be necessary.
    • In case of doubt and/or absence of the Executive Director, the Administrative Director in Haiti is the conveyor and interpreter of policies of Haiti Medical Missions of Memphis.
  • While in Haiti, the volunteer agrees to the following:
    • Will not participate in any political activity or public protest of any kind
    • Will not engage in any potentially dangerous activities without the consent of the Executive Director, Mission Team Leader and/or the Administrative Director
    • Will not disrupt the activities of the L’Ouverture Cleary School or the St. Charles Seminary
    • Will not engage in the use of drugs and other illegal substances, including excessive alcohol consumption and/or intoxication
    • Will not carry or use illegal firearms
    • Will not smoke or drink in the clinic
Travel and Lodging Costs
  • All volunteers traveling to Haiti are expected to pay their own travel and lodging costs.  Travel costs are estimated at $500 - $700 round trip, depending on city of origination as well as fluctuation in airfare costs.
  • Once in Haiti, lodging is provided via the residence attached to the clinic and will comfortably accommodate 20 people.  The residence includes a kitchen, which is used by the team to prepare daily meals.  In order to maintain the residence, HMMOM recommends a daily individual donation of $30 to cover associated lodging and transportation.
The Clinic
  • The clinic includes a number of examining rooms, an operating room, an ICU/RR, X-ray, a lab, and a dental/eye clinic.  The clinic also includes a library/ classroom.
  • While the clinic has a limited inventory of supplies in Haiti, medicines and supplies that are to be used for each mission trip are generally collected, packed and brought with the team for each trip.  Any items not used during the trip are then added to inventory for future use.
  • In addition to seeing patients at the clinic, the team may round at other facilities and work at other established clinic sites, including sites run by the Missionary Sisters and Brothers.
