Math 108 Decorates Library Windows

On April 19th, Math 108 met in the library stacks.  Each group had an “art director” and “artists”.  The “art director” stayed rooted in one position with one eye closed.   He/she then directed the artists where to draw lines to outline architecture seen through the window.  Sometimes the artists had to resist their intuition regarding where the lines should be drawn.  Students learned that the artwork changes with the viewpoint.  They also noticed that lines that are parallel in the real world in a plane parallel to the window appear to be parallel in the artwork.  Lines that are parallel in the real world that lie in other planes converge to a vanishing point in the window.
