Friday in class there will be an opportunity to work some problems similar to test problems that can improve your test grade.  This will not include the word problem.  You should continue working on word problems.  There will be a quiz next week.    CA4 on BCA is available for practice setting up word problems. Note:  in taking BCA, you may need to explicitly indicate multiplication. (e.g. Don’t write xy write x*y.) I noticed this in taking CA3.

9/22      Work on setting up work problems.  At a minimum have p. 99 #18, p.118  24, 28, & test problem that I will write below done.  It would be good to practice other problems that I have worked previously in class.  Be sure to define your variable.  You need to be able to write the problem up so that someone that does not understand the problem can read your problem and understand it.  You can ask me questions or get help from others.  However, it will not accomplish anything to have someone else work the problems for you.  I am also available if anyone wants a problem session.

Another item that several of you need to review is functional notation, specifically assignments on 3.2.  I will have the tests Wednesday.  You may review your test in my office before that if you would like to do so.

I will get back with you on the BCA problems.  Don’t worry about getting a perfect score.  Use it as a learning exercise.  Write down any problems in which you disagree with the program & they can be part of class discussion.

Define appropriate variables.  Find algebraic equations, or set of equations in terms of your variables describing the problem.  Solve the problem.

A merchant wishes to mix peanuts that cost $1.20 per pound and cashews that cost $4.60 per pound to obtain 10 pounds of a mixture that costs $2.70 per pound. How many pounds of peanuts are needed?  You may approximate the answer to the nearest 0.1 lb.

9/15      3.3        1-4, 27, 28, 39, 45, 46, 49

            3.4        1-8, 19, 21, 25, 27, 31-38

You should be able to quickly sketch y=x2, y =x3, y=|x|, y = 1/x as well as transformations of these functions.

*Accurately sketch the following by hand on quadrille paper.  Be sure to label axes and scale. Use a ruler for lines.

 r(x) = -2x2 + 5, g(x) = (x-3)2 – 4, h(x) = -x3 + 1, a(x) = |2x + 4|, , the fns. in 9 & 12 sec. 3.3

9/3                    Those of you having difficulty with the calculator, your text has technology tips for various models in sec. 2.1 & 2.2

Read those sections carefully, working through the examples with your graphing calculator in hand.

(For #28, give a rough sketch of the complete graph and the window that you are using.  Then give a rough sketch of the screens at which you are looking to solve the problem with associated windows.)

After looking at your quiz question for today, it looks like many of you need to work more problems in 1.4.
