Course Description:  This course is designed to illustrate and explain the principles discussed in Chemistry 113.

Prerequisite or Corequisite:  Chemistry 113

Required Texts and Materials:

      1. Chemistry 113 - 114 package of experiments

      2. Scientific Calculator

      3. Safety glasses ($4.25) or safety goggles ($6.25)

General Course Goals:  The course is designed to:

    1)   Introduce students to the basic techniques and procedures used in
          the chemistry laboratory;

    2)   Teach students how to collect and analyze scientific data; and

    3)   Illustrate principles discussed in Chemistry 113 .

Attendance:  Attendance in laboratory is mandatory.  Experimental reports will not be accepted from students who do not attend the laboratory session; and  students should plan to attend the laboratory section for which they have registered. If you know that you must miss a lab and have a valid reason, see/contact me before that laboratory session begins; if possible, you may be allowed to attend a different lab section.

Assignments:  You are expected to read the assigned laboratory readings prior to the date the experiment is to be performed.  Advance study assignments are to be turned in prior to the start of assigned experiments.  Laboratory reports are to be turned in before you leave the laboratory for the day.

Point Distribution:

           7 Advance Study Assignments @ 50 points each.     350 points
           7  Laboratory Reports  @  100  points  each            700 points
           Comprehensive Final Examination                             350 points

Grading Policy:

You must show all work on problems.  All calculations must be shown; and all final answers must contain the correct number of significant figures.

Comprehensive Final Examination: A comprehensive laboratory final examination will be given at the conclusion of the course.

Eligibility:  Any student who withdraws from a Chemistry lecture course at any time during the semester must also withdraw from the associated laboratory course if it is being taken concurrently.

General Information:

     1. A breakage fee of $25.00 must be paid at the beginning of the semester, or must already be on deposit.  No assignments will be accepted
         after the second laboratory period unless the deposit has been paid.

     2.  This deposit, minus deductions for breakage or lost/misplaced
          materials, will be refunded after your last chemistry laboratory course
          at CBU.

     3.  Students must check out of the laboratory on the assigned day.
          Failure to return the locker key will result in a $5.00 assessment being
          made against the Breakage Card Deposit.  Failure to check out before
          the end of the semester will result in a $5.00 assessment being made
          against the breakage card.

Laboratory Safety and Conduct:

        1. Safety glasses must be worn at all times in the laboratory.  Contact lenses should not be worn in the lab!
        2. Always return  chemicals and equipment to the location where you found them.  Keep the lab neat!
        3. Students are required to clean up their work area each day before leaving the lab.
