Radiation Belts
Due to the fact that the earth has a magnetic field associated with it (the reason compasses work), and due to the fact that some of the radiation from the sun is in the form of electrons and protons (rather than purely light), the earth has what are called radiation belts.
The magnetism of the earth traps most of the electrons and protons that stream out from the sun and that would otherwise hit the earth.
