Rotation about the axis
Since New York sees the sun rise before Memphis, the earth must be rotating eastward and hence counterclockwise as viewed from above the North Pole.
One result of this rotation is the existence of low pressure and high pressure centers and the winds that accompany them.
In the northern hemisphere, the winds go counterclockwise around a low pressure center instead of going directly toward it. This can be explained as an effect of the rotation of the earth!
