Note that for the line, as the point gets farther away from the line, the further charges on the line do not get that much farther away but the angle gets steeper, so they have a larger effect on the vertical component. This larger effect somewhat diminishes the lesser effect the charges right underneath the point have on the field as the point gets farther away.
