Biochemistry
at CBU
Most professional biochemists did not earn an undergraduate degree in biochemistry. They earned them in the more traditional areas of biology or chemistry. At CBU we have programs in these traditional areas and we have a good selection of courses that would be most useful to people interested in a career in biochemistry.
At CBU we have a two semester sequence in Biochemistry at the upper level that has an Organic Chemistry pre-requisite - meaning these courses are serious courses in biochemistry. The first course (CHEM 315) presently has a lab associated with it, and the second course (CHEM 316) may have a lab associated with it in the near future. We also have several biology courses that should be of interest to someone interested in biochemistry including Genetics (BIOL 311) with lab, Vertebrate Physiology (BIOL 312) with lab, Microbiology (BIOL 321) with lab, Pharmacology (BIOL 367), Immunology (BIOL415) with lab, Cell/Molecular Biology (BIOL 421) with lab, and Neuroscience (BIOL 451) with lab. Our senior research course, either in Chemistry or Biology, can be directed to provide you with a research experience with someone in the Biochemistry area if you wish.
The checklist and paradigm, along with course syllabi can be found on our Chemistry Department page. Similar info about biology can be found on our Biology Department page .
Please note how many of our science courses have labs associated with them. These labs have very good equipment, and they are strictly for undergraduate students - they are NOT just for show In particular, we have a Molecular Modeling Center in the Chemistry Department. We have a web page showing in detail some of the equipment used in our chemistry labs. In almost all cases, the professor in the course is also the professor in the lab associated with that course.
Information about our senior research can be found on our research page .
