Law and Science at CBU
Preparation for Law School with a background in Science

A&P lab

The law and science interact in several areas including patent law, medical malpractice, forensics, and product liability.

Most law schools have no preference as to major, but the natural sciences are clearly rigorous fields that will help students develop the skills law schools do look for. Besides high grades and high LSAT scores, law schools look for evidence of organization, research, analysis, critical reading, verbal communication, and especially writing. Students should also focus on a minor and/or electives that develop writing skills and that require extensive and sophisticated reading. Courses in English, Philosophy, Religion, History, Political Science, Psychology, and/or Business can all contribute to a student's preparation for law school. Students are also encouraged to do some kind of off-campus service learning project, study abroad, or internship if possible. The most important things to remember are to get a well-rounded education and to major in a challenging subject that you enjoy.

In addition to our traditional science majors of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, our Natural Science major allows a lot of free electives that you can choose to supplement your science courses. We also have majors in Mathematics and in Computer Science, a field that is of growing importance in the area of law.

Some of the science courses at CBU that you might be interested in fitting into your science major are BIOL 103 Biology of Addition, BIOL 321 Microbiology, BIOL 367 Pharmacology, BIOL 412 General Ecology, BIOL 413 Parasitology, BIOL 415 Immunology, and CHEM 312 Biochemistry

Some courses outside of science that you might be interested in fitting into your course of study are POLS 112 American Government, POLS 370 International Law, CJ 150 Public Administration, CJ 200 Criminal Justice, CJ 362 Sociology of Addiction, PSYC 105 General Psychology, PSYC 218 Human Development, PSYC 225 Biological Psychology, SOC 101 Introduction to Sociology, SOC 301 Medical Anthropology, and SOC 353 Social Psychology. In addition, there are several ethics courses that would be useful: PHIL 322 Medical Ethics, PHIL 323 Business Ethics, and PHIL 325 Environmental Ethics.
