The spotlight shines on Dr. Johnny B. Holmes.

Title: Professor of Physics, and Dean of the School of Sciences.

Length of service at CBU: Dr. Holmes has been teaching at CBU since 1976.

Courses taught: Dr. Holmes regularly teaches Introductory Physics I (PHYS 201) and its lab (PHYS 201L), and Introductory Physics II (PHYS 202) and its lab (PHYS202L).

Other courses taught recently: Introduction to Astronomy (NSCI 111), Physics I (PHYS 150), Physics II (PHYS 251), and Advanced Mechanics (PHYS 380).

Formal Education: Dr. Holmes has a B.S. in Physics from Rockhurst College (Kansas City) and a Masters and Ph.D. (both in Physics) from the University of Miami (Florida).

Background: Dr. Holmes grew up in Shawnee, Kansas, a suburb of Kansas City. He played baseball as a left handed pitcher during the summers while growing up and continued playing in high school and college. He worked for his father in drywall construction during the summers of high school and college. He and his wife, Sharon, have two children: Brent age 14, and Catherine age 10.

Professional interests: Dr. Holmes is interested in effective and enjoyable education. In 1981 he began writing computer programs on an Apple II to aid in his teaching. He has continued this effort and now, in collaboration with Dr. John Varriano, has 48 computer homework programs for use in the Physics I, II and III courses and in the Introductory Physics I and II courses. He is the web master for the School of Sciences web pages. In 1989, Dr. Holmes was the first winner of the Marguerite Cooper Distinguished Professor Award for excellence in teaching at CBU.

Service: Dr. Holmes is presently serving his 10th year as Dean of the School of Sciences. In the picture to the right, Dr. Holmes is shown presenting the Dominic Dunn Award for 2004 to Patrice Michelle Driscoll. Before serving as Dean, he served as Chair of the Physics and Natural Science Department for 18 years. He has served as President of the Faculty Assembly twice. He has served on many committees at CBU including several as the chair. Dr. Holmes also has served at Holy Rosary Catholic School where his two children attend, twice as a volunteer head coach (soccer) and many times as a volunteer assistant coach (soccer, basketball, softball, and baseball), including this spring with 5th & 6th grade girls' softball.
