Br. Johm Monzyk

The spotlight shines on Br. John Monzyk.

Title: Adjunct Assistant Professor of Physics and Director of the Science Olympiad at CBU

Courses regularly taught: PHYS 150L Physics I Lab ; PHYS 201L Introductory Physics I Lab ; PHYS 251L Physics II Lab.

Length of service at CBU: Br. John has been teaching at CBU since 2001.

Formal Education: Br. John has earned his B.A. in Physics from Bellarmine (now University), Louisville, KY; his M.A. in Theology from Catholic Theological Union, Chicago; his M.S. in Physics from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL., and his Ph.D. in Molecular Science from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL.

Professional Interests: Non-destructive methods of measuring thermal properties of materials, especially by a method called optical beam deflection.

Background: Br. John was born and raised in Washington, MO a town on the Missouri River 50 miles West of St. Louis. He joined the Passionist Community after high school graduation in 1966, taking first vows in 1967. After earning the M.A. in theology he taught at Holy Family High School in Birmingham, AL. During Graduate School in Carbondale Br. John taught physics in the Medical Education Preparatory Program.

Service interests: Br. John serves as the Director of the Science Olympiad at CBU. He has judged the local science fair and twice the Intel International Science Fair. He Has given talks on religious life at parishes and schools.

Interests: Since taking a short course on dangerous volcanoes on site at Mt. St. Helens, Br. John checks several web sites daily to visually monitor the mountain and view its seismic activity. Br. John listens mostly to Classical Music and holds season tickets to the Memphis Symphony. He occasionally enjoys older Country Music. Br. John enjoys seeing cities from tour boats. He also works physical puzzles.
