The spotlight shines on Dr William Busler. Title: Professor of Chemistry
Courses regularly taught: CHEM 113 and 113L (Principles of Chemistry I and lab); CHEM 114 and 114L (Principles of Chemistry II and lab); CHEM 351 and 351L (Physical Chemistry I and lab); CHEM 352 and 352L (Physical Chemistry II and lab); and CHEM 439 (Astrophysical Chemistry).
Length of service at CBU: Dr. Busler has been teaching at CBC/CBU since 1977.
Formal Education: Dr. Busler earned his B.S. in Chemistry in 1966 from Christian Brothers College, and his Ph.D.
in Physical Biochemistry in 1977 from the University of Tennessee Center for
the Health Sciences (Memphis), with a minor in Physiology.
Professional Interests: Dr. Busler is interested in most aspects of Chemistry. While on sabbatical leave a few years ago, he developed an antigen/antibody test for Lyme disease. He has written a paper on Isothermal Compressibility Determination by Ultracentrifugation.
He has written three books in Astronomy for amateurs, and is working on a fourth (A Guide to the Caldwell Objects). His Short Course in Astronomy is used in his Astrophysical Chemistry course, and by the Memphis Astronomical Society.
Background: He was born and raised in Memphis. He attended St. Anne Elementary School and Christian Brothers High School.
Interests: Astronomy is his first love; he has been a member of the Memphis Astronomical Society since 1957, and on the M.A.S. Board since 1959. He likes to attend classical music concerts and operas, and listens to classical recordings, mainly from the 1960’s. (His wife, Karen, is Principal Flutist of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra.) He has written numerous musical compositions over the years, some actually performed in public. He still occasionally attempts to compose, when he isn’t grading lab reports.
