Description: An examination of the management functions
and the basic concepts and principles of management. Major topics include the history of
management, planning and decision-making, organizational structure and design
issues, leadership and motivation theories, and organizational control. Social, legal, and ethical principles and an
international perspective are also developed.
Prerequisites: Junior
standing

Course
Objectives: This introductory course in the
study of management is designed to introduce the student to the conceptual
domain, vocabulary, and fundamental principles of management theory and
practice. As such, the specific
objectives are:

To acquaint
students with the vocabulary of the management profession
·
To give students
a basic understanding of the fundamental management functions
·
To provide an
overview to the conceptual domain of the field of management
·
To introduce
students to the management profession
·
To identify
current issues and trends in management
·
To recognize the
ethical and social issues pertinent to management practice
Educational
Philosophy: It is my belief that the educational
experience should be a combination of academic challenges with the moral and
ethical beliefs embodied in the Christian Brothers culture. I believe that it is the responsibility of
the instructor to provide an environment in which the student may learn and
prepare for their professional careers and life experiences. To achieve this, I believe that learning is
the result of classroom interaction, individual study and research, and group
involvement.

Course
Methods: MGMT 337 incorporates the following pedagogical
techniques:
Lecture
and in-class discussion of assigned text material, written and oral papers
along with in-class presentations, and exams.

Attendance: Attendance
will be taken at the start of each class.
One-half (1/2) of a bonus point will be added to the student’s total grade
points for each class that the student attends and arrives for on time. No bonus points will be added if the student
attends but is late. Three points will
be deducted from the bonus points for each class that the student is absent.
Student Assignments:
Exams: There
will be four exams covering material from the text and class lectures that will
cover 3 to 4 chapters each. These exams
will consist of multiple choice and short discussion or essay questions. Students must inform the instructor in
advance if special arrangements are needed.
Make-up exams will only be given if the student makes arrangements prior
to the exam and has a valid reason for missing the scheduled time.
Research
Papers: Research papers must be typed, double-spaced and
submitted on or before the assigned date.
Late papers will be penalized by one letter grade for each day it is
late. No exceptions! Use a bibliography and show all
references. Research papers are to have
a minimum of 8 pages and a maximum of 10 pages plus the title page and
bibliography. Use APA or other accepted
format for papers. Papers should be
stapled in the upper left-hand corner – No report covers. The paper topic must be selected from the
following list. A topic closely related
to the titles listed below may be used if the student clears it with the
instructor.

“The Impact of Diversity on the Management of
Organizations”
News
Summaries: Each student will be responsible for two (2) news
articles that are related to the subject being addressed in the assigned
chapter. Articles may be selected from
any current news source. i.e., The Wall
Street Journal, Forbes, Fortune, Business Week, The Memphis Business Journal,
etc. Articles should be current – no
more than one year old. A one to two
page summary including a statement of the article’s relevance to the current
chapter is required. Students will give
an informal presentation of their article at the start of class. Presentations should be no longer than 3-4
minutes. Any student that is not
prepared will receive a zero (0) for that portion of their grade. Make-ups are not allowed.
Notebook: Each
student is required to keep a separate notebook with the following:
- A title page with the student’s name,
phone number, and e-mail address.
- The
following two exercises from each chapter:
- At least one “Building Effective ______ Skills” exercise from each chapter.

“Skills self-assessment instrument” from each chapter.
Notebooks
will be collected periodically during the term.
If materials are not current, the student will not receive full
credit. Keep your notebook current and
bring it with you to class.
