| The CBU Physics Department sponsored the annual meeting of the Tennessee Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers on March 18-19, 2005. Dr. John Varriano, TAAPT President, presided over the meeting. Dr. Johnny B. Holmes and Br. John Monzyk, C.P. attended the meeting and assisted in the proceedings. The department thanks Analice Sowell (B.S. Chemistry with Physics Minor, 2002; M.A.T., 2005) who greatly helped in the organization of the meeting. Analice is presently teaching chemistry and physics at Christian Brothers High School in Memphis. |
| Dr. John Varriano gave a presentation entitled "The Circuit Question: Pedagogical Failure or Human Nature" at the annual meeting of the Tennessee Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN, on March 27, 2004. Dr. Varriano is serving as President of the TAAPT for the 2004-05 term. CBU will host the 2005 conference. |
| Br. John Monzyk, C.P. attended a NSF Chautauqua short course on Volcanic Hazards during July 2003. Tony Irving from the University of Washington led the course. As part of the course, Br. John visited Mt. St. Helen's and Mt. Rainier. |
| Dr. Johnny B. Holmes created two new programs for the CBU Computer-Assisted Homework for Physics
(CAHP)Project. There are now forty-five programs for student use. Programs have been distributed to over 500 faculty and students throughout the world via the web. |

| Br. John Monzyk served as a judge at the 2002 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held in Lexington, KY in May 2002. The fair is the largest science competition in the world for pre-college students with over 1200 students from over 40 different countries. |
| Br. Kevin Ryan, F.S.C. presented a talk on cosmology on October 4, 2001 at the Memphis Theological Seminary as part of a religion and science discussion series. |
| Dr. Bernard Beard was invited by the Condensed Matter Theory Group (CMTG) of the Dipartimento di Fisica (Physics Department) of the Università degli Studi di Firenze (University of Florence), Italy, to teach a short course in his research specialty, quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods. He gave 10 lectures spread over a week and a half in June and July of 2001. These lectures targeted graduate students and researchers with little or no experience in QMC. He also collaborated with members of the CMTG on future joint publications, spending a total of three weeks in Florence. This work was funded in part by the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN, National Institute for Nuclear Physics) and the Istituto Nazionale per la Fisica della Materia (INFM, National Institute for the Physics of Matter). |
| Dr. Rel Morgan retired from CBU in May, 2001 after thirty-four years of service, eighteen of those years as Dean of the School of Sciences. The Physics Department and School owe much to Rel for his dedication and hard work. Congratulations, Rel! |
