Memories of My Youth: The Old Steel Curtain
We did it again!!!!

The Steelers Logo
The Steelers' helmets used to be gold with the players' numbers written on the side of the helmets. In 1962, Republic Steel, located in Cleveland, suggested that the team use the "steelmark" as a helmet logo. The steelmark was created by the American steel industry and often appears on steel products. It is a circle enclosing three hypocycloids and the word 'Steel'. The colors of the hypocycloids represent the three main components used to make steel; yellow for coal, orange for ore (iron), and blue for steel scrap.

The Steelers organization liked the idea and were given permission by the American Iron and Steel Institute to change the word 'Steel' to 'Steelers' inside the steelmark. However, when the logos arrived, the Steelers weren't sure that they looked good on the solid gold helmets. As a result, equipment manager Jack Hart was instructed to put the logo only on the right side of the helmet.

The 1962 Steelers finished 9-5 and became the winningest team in franchise history. By finishing second in the Eastern Conference, the Steelers qualified for the Playoff Bowl, the first postseason game for Art Rooney’s team. For that appearance, the Steelers wanted to do something special, so they changed the color of their helmets from gold to solid black. The logo also looked better against the black background.

Having the logo only on one side of the helmet was unconventional and generated much attention. This interest, coupled with the new found success of the team, made the organization decide to adopt the new helmets permanently.
