Principles of Biology I (Bio111)

The first half of a comprehensive study of contemporary biology, this
semester covers biochemistry, cytology, photosynthesis, energy metabolism, cell divison, development, genetics, evolution, systematics and taxonomy of viruses, monerans, protists, fungi and plants. Includes three lectures and one discussion section per week. No prerequisite; some knowledge of chemistry recommended. Offered in both Fall and Spring semesters.

Principles of Biology I Lab (Bio 111L)

Laboratory experience to illustrate and explain the principles covered in
BIOL 111. Prerequisite or Corequisite BIOL 111.

Principles of Biology II (Bio 112)

Continuation of BIOL 111, this semester covers systematics and taxonomy of animals, anatomy and physiology of eucaryotic organisms, embryology, ethology and ecology. Includes three lectures and one discussion section per week. Offered in the Spring semester and usually in the Summer Term I.

Principles of Biology Lab (Bio 112L)

Laboratory experience to illustrate and explain the principles coveerd in
BIOL 112. Prerequisite or Corequisite BIOL 112.

Immunology (Bio 415)

The study of antigens, antibodies, organs and cells involved in humoral and cell-mediated immunity; immunologic techniques; allergy and other immune malfunctions. Offered in the Fall semster. Prerequisite: BIOL 111 & 112; CHEM 211 & 212

Immunology Lab (Bio 415L)

Laboratory experience to illustrate and explain the principles covered in
BIOL 415. Prerequisite or Corequisite: BIOL 415.

Cell Biology (Bio 421)

A study of : (1) the structure and function of biomolecules with emphasis on proteins and nucleic acids; (2) bioenergetics, enzyme kinetics, cell kinetics and the molecular biology of metabolic regulation; (3) eucaryotic cell structures and functions. Prerequisite: CHEM 212. Recommended: Biochemistry and Physics. Offered in the Spring semester of even numbered years.

Cell Biology Lab (Bio 421L)

Cell/Molecular Biology Laboratory. Laboratory experiences will
demonstrate the concepts covered in BIOL 421. Experiments will employ techniques such as PCR, transfection, amplification and restriction mapping of plasmid DNA, western blotting and affinity chromatography. Corequisite: BIOL 421. One semester; 1 credit

Biology Seminar (Bio 362)

Seminar series in which research scientists are invited ro discuss their
current research. Students are expected to submit a research proposal which they can conduct for their mandatory senior research project. Required of junior Biology students. Prerequiksite junior standing. Offered in the Spring semester. One semester; 1 credit
