Welcome to NOVEMBER

THIRD ENGLISH CLUB MEETING, OCTOBER 29, 1977

For our third meeting, we our guest was Dr. Kristan McColgan, the Department of English's Milton Scholar. Professor McColgan shared with us the logic behind her interest in John Milton and especially in Paradise Lost.

In addition, she spoke enthusiastically about England and her delight in touring the literary shrines. Of these, she spoke in detail about the British Museum Reading Room. [see http://www.british-museum.ac.uk] to check the website of the British Museum] It is difficult to listen to Dr. McColgan talk about England in General and Milton in particular without becoming infected by her excitement.

SECOND ENGLISH CLUB MEETING, OCTOBER 16, 1997

"Fit audience though few," as someone famous once said, came to speak with Marty Priola, recent graduate of CBU's English program (93) and of The University of Memphis' [TUM 97]. Marty spoke convincingly about the ordeals of Law School and the different kinds of programs represented by Law Schools. Several students who plan to attend Law School were there to quiz Marty about what they might expect.

Marty also narrated his adventures with the Cormac McCarthy Society Home Page which he was instrumental in creating and continues to maintain as Web Master. We discovered that Shelby Foote pointed Marty towards Cormac McCarthy as one of the most exciting new novelists. Marty has subsequently read everything he has written and begun to collect McCarthy's first editions. His collection is testimony to the value of the artifacts generated by American writers. Marty is an outstanding example of the kind of professional who credits our English major program with preparing him well for his successes.

Law School graduate, Web Master, and Book Collector Priola is currently applying for Graduate School in English looking forward to a Ph.D. in American Literary Studies.

FIRST ENGLISH CLUB MEETING, OCTOBER 1, 1997

We met yesterday in K-200 for the first meeting of the English Club 1997 and its first program of "Meet the Professor" sessions. Seventeen students and six professors came together to celebrate what it means to be a reader of books, a student of texts, a citizen of the University during our encounter with Dr. Ann Marie Wranovix, our guest for this "Meet the Professor" session.

During our business meeting we determined we needed officers in order to complete the SGA qualifications for a student organization. Consequently we added to our roster of officers, an SGA Representative. Nominations were made. A motion was made that we elect the nominated individuals by acclamation. This motion was seconded and passed by voice vote of the body. Our next meeting will be chaired by the newly elected President of the English Club, Jennifer Lynch.

Students nominated and elected :

Jennifer Lynch--President
Jannica Burk--Vice President
Ben Earthman--Secretary
Andrea Townsend--SGA Representative

When you see these students, congratulate them for taking this position of leadership in our new English Club.
