A snapshot of drug use
BIOL 103, Spring 2009

Sampling population included 19 females, 8 males

I.  Percentage of respondents who indicate some usage or exposure.  This can range from once only to daily use.

II.  Frequency of drug use.

Results:

Nearly 100% of students use caffeine daily.

Despite the drinking age limit of 21, most undergraduates have experience with alcohol at younger ages.

Results in this survey indicate that a higher percentage of females sampled wine coolers than males.  This may be sampling error due to the small sampling size of 8 males in the survey.  Wine coolers are generally a “girl” thing.

Chewing tobacco is a “guy” thing.

III.  The CAGE Survey

The CAGE survey consists of 4 questions, and serves as a quick screening device to determine whether individuals have a potential problem with alcohol and/or drugs.

The questions include:

      1) Have you ever felt you should Cut down on your drinking?

      2) Have people Annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?

      3) How you felt bad or Guilty about your drinking?

      4) Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or get rid of a hangover (Eye of the dog.)

Can the CAGE survey be used as a predictive tool?  Probably not.  Nonetheless:
