Derived from combustion (oxidation) of fossil fuels containing sulfur. Sulfur + oxygen ? a family of sulfur oxides, designated at SOx, where ‘x’ can equal 2 or 3. SO3 combines with water to form sulfuric acid. SO2 combines with water to form sulfurous acid. Both acidify rain.
