Depletion of Stratospheric ozone
Ultraviolet light converts oxygen, which is transparent to UV radiation, to ozone, which is opaque. This prevents the penetration of UV radiation to the troposphere, the part of the atmosphere closest to the earth’s surface.
UV light is known to cause mutations and to skin cancer.
Gases such as hydrofluorocarbons catalyze the conversion of ozone back to oxygen.
