3.  The University of Illinois offers a unique MD/PhD opportunity through their Medical Scholars Program (MSP).

We are writing to send you information about the unique MD/PhD opportunities available to your students through the Medical Scholars Program (MSP) at the University of Illinois ( http://www.med.uiuc.edu/msp).  If you have students who have done undergraduate research and plan to pursue a career in academic medicine and medical research, we encourage them to apply at https://www-s.med.uiuc.edu/msp/application/welcome.asp .  We also ask that you print off this e-mail and poster http://www.med.uiuc.edu/msp/Poster.pdf and place it either on a bulletin board or perhaps in a programs binder in your office for students to reference.

Please note that only U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible to apply to the College of Medicine, and thus to the Medical Scholars Program.  Our MSP on-line application deadline is December 31, 2006.  Students must also designate school code #128 University of Illinois at Chicago on their AMCAS application by December 31, 2006.  For more information, please visit our MSP Admissions website at http://www.med.uiuc.edu/msp/Admissions.asp .  The MSP web site provides additional information about the MSP and has links to most graduate departments.  A few highlights about the MSP:

  •  The MSP is one of the largest MD/PhD programs in the country with over 150 MD/PhD students currently enrolled.  The average MCAT score is 32 and the average GPA is a 3.5 for our MSP Entering Class.
  •   The MSP provides a diverse offering of PhD fields to combine with the MD - we have students pursuing PhDs in the humanities, social sciences, engineering, physical sciences and, of course, in the biomedical sciences.
  •  All of the MD and PhD training is done at the Urbana-Champaign campus (http://www.uiuc.edu).  The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign boasts the third largest library in the country, is the home of National Center for Supercomputing Applications, and the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, which provides unique opportunities for interdisciplinary research.
  • Our clinical training program provides many opportunities for 1-on-1interaction with practicing physicians.
  •  Scheduling - The primary scheduling requirement of the MSP is that students begin their studies in the graduate program.  After completing the first year of graduate school, students, in consultation with their faculty advisors, and in accordance with MSP policies choose the appropriate sequencing of disciplines.
  • Funding opportunities available for all MD/PhD students generally include a tuition and fee waiver along with a stipend.  Funding is usually provided through the student’s graduate department in the form of a research or teaching assistantship, and/or fellowship.
  • The MSP also offers an MD/JD and an MD/MBA program, although funding for students in these two programs is limited.

We pride ourselves on the friendliness of our staff.  We encourage you and/or your prospective students to call Amanda Cuevas, MSP Assistant Dean, with any questions you might have.  She can be reached by phone at 217-333-8146 or by e-mail at acuevas@uiuc.edu

4.  Admissions Factoids about Mercer University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences - Fall 2006.

 Class of 2010

On August 21, we enrolled 147 first year pharmacy students as the Class of 2010. Their average overall undergraduate GPA is 3.43 and their average PCAT composite percentile score is 82. Additionally, 82 percent of them have prior experience in a pharmacy setting and more than half the class have undergraduate degrees (as you know, both of these are not requirements; but are more commonplace as competition increases).

Admissions – Class of 2011

As unbelievable as it seems, we are now in the process of admitting our class that will graduate in May 2011. Our deadline for applications is Friday, January 5, 2007. However, I do strongly encourage applicants to submit their materials well before that date. We just began interviews last Friday and we will begin accepting applicants into the class next month.

PharmCAS Advisors Portal

I hope you all will continue using the PharmCAS Advisor Portal. This portal can be used as a real-time dynamic tool to view, search, and print data on students who have attended their institution and have authorized PharmCAS to release their information to pre-health professions advisors. Advisor accounts activated in previous years are carried forward each cycle.

The secure portal is accessible at the following URL: https://portal.pharmcas.org/advisors/advisors.htm. Since the Advisor Portal is private, AACP asks us to not release the link (URL) to unauthorized individuals. Please contact the PharmCAS office if you have questions regarding Advisor Portal and feel free to provide us feedback regarding that process.

Day at Mercer for Pre-Pharmacy Advisors

Please mark your calendars for the next Day at Mercer for Pre-Pharmacy Advisors. It will be held on Friday, March 23.  We will have the meeting on campus that afternoon and will follow up with a reception and dinner at the Marriott Century Center.  Accommodations will also be provided at the Marriott.  We will be sending you more detailed information about the event in January.

As always, if you or your students would like to have someone come to talk to them about pharmacy school and admissions, I am willing to include a visit to your school in my recruitment travel. Please let me know if you indeed think a visit would be beneficial to you and your students. I also encourage you to let me know if we may be of further assistance to you.

Respectfully,

Jordana

5.  Vanderbilt University offers graduate degrees in Biomedical Sciences.

The graduate program at Vanderbilt University in Biomedical Sciences has made great strides over the last 10-15 years, and we are proud to be one of the top twenty programs in the nation. All graduate students are provided special support and help during their first year of graduate education when they are adjusting to the transition from undergraduate school to graduate education. The first year of our program is an umbrella IGP (Interdisciplinary Graduate Program). This allows students to “shop around” widely until they find the best possible fit for their research interests.  Additionally, students from diverse background are given special care and guidance. Dr. Roger Chalkley, Senior Associate Dean of Graduate Studies designed the IGP program and he directs both IGP and MD/PhD Programs at Vanderbilt University. I work on Dr. Chalkley’s team and have had an opportunity to work with a wide breath of diverse students in the graduate program.

If you have students who may be interested, please ask them to look at our Website http://bret.mc.vanderbilt.edu/bret to get more details about the graduate program at Vanderbilt University. They can also apply online without incurring any application fee at http://mc.vanderbilt.edu/igp/

Graduate students receive a yearly stipend of $24,000 in addition to tuition, fees and medical insurance.

We also offer a Summer Research Program for post junior undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds. Information about the summer program can be found at the website http://bret.mc.vanderbilt.edu/bret. An application is also available online.

If there are any questions with which I can help; please contact me through email at Bharati.Mehrotra@Vanderbilt.edu or you can also call me at 615 343 1021.  For general information on applications you can also contact Dr. Michelle Grundy, Director of Admissions for Graduate Programs in Biomedical Sciences in the BRET office. From the promotional letter:

Now is an exciting time to join the field of public health.  Today, our public health professionals face issues such as bioterrorism, AIDS, violence, environmental hazards, access to health care, and the re-emergence of infectious diseases.  The Rollins School of Public Health (RSPH) of Emory University prepares our students to meet these challenges.  In order to introduce students to our programs at Emory’s Rollins School of Public Health and the many wonderful public health connections in Atlanta, we would like to invite them to join us on Saturday, October 14, 2006 for our annual Fall Open House.  If you have students who are interested in graduate studies in health or social sciences, we hope they will consider Emory University’s Master of Public Health Program.
