2.  The University of Queensland-Ochsner Program allows students to complete their first two years at the University of Queensland’s medical school, located in Brisbane, Australia.

We know many of you have a qualified student or two from last year’s application cycle who did not get a medical school place. Some of these students could begin medical school in January 2010, and we want to alert you to an excellent opportunity for qualified American students to obtain a superb medical education.

The University of Queensland-Ochsner program allows students to complete their first two years at the University of Queensland’s medical school, which is ranked number 32 in the world, according to a “Times” of London survey of international medical schools, and which is located in Brisbane, Australia. Students then complete their second two years of clinical rotations at the Ochsner Clinical School in New Orleans. They are supported by the faculty at Ochsner in their residency applications and participate in Match Day.

This is a wonderful opportunity for students who are committed to a career in medicine and who have otherwise solid applications but who have struggled a bit with the MCAT. We are looking for MCAT scores of 8, 8, 8, M and a B average.

If you have questions, please do call us at 877.777.0155 ext.104 and we’ll be happy to explain the program to you. Alternatively please give our  contact information directly to any students you may know of who might be interested. The url of our website is listed below.

Dear Dr. Eisen:

I am privileged to serve as the Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs at the University of Mississippi, School of Pharmacy. It is my understanding that you serve as the academic advisor to pre-pharmacy students at your institution and I am contacting you in this capacity. If per chance this communication should have been directed to another individual on your campus would you be so kind as to forward it to his/her attention.

It has been brought to our attention that there is a serious misconception on the part of some non-Mississippi residents that the School of Pharmacy does not accept non-residents into the Doctor of Pharmacy program unless they had enrolled at Ole Miss as freshmen. This is totally inaccurate. The School welcomes applications from all qualified individuals. We are very concerned that perhaps some of your students had been misinformed and declined application to our program.  Given the well documented academic quality of your institution, we certainly wanted to correct that misunderstanding and request that you so inform your majors.

Our program has an excellent national reputation based partly on the performance of our graduates on the national pharmacy licensure exam, the scholarly activities of our faculty, the size of our graduate programs, and the accomplishments of our alumni. In addition, our tuition is among the lowest in the nation. We are concerned that perhaps your students may have researched our program because of its reputation, but due to this mis-perception regarding residency issues, did not apply. Our priority application deadline had originally been listed as November 1. However, due to these circumstances the absolute deadline for consideration has been extended to February 1. We would deeply appreciate your encouragement of your advisees to apply to our program. We are not a PharmCAS school so applicants must apply directly to our program ( www.olemiss.edu/application). Program information is available online at www.pharmacy.olemiss.edu .

Sincerely,

Dr. Marvin Wilson
Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs
