è 1. The School of Nursing at Georgetown University (Washington, DC) offers Accelerated BSN/Direct Entry to MSN, 16-month accelerated BSN and Master's degree in Health Systems Administration programs

Accelerated BSN/Direct Entry to MSN Program:

There is a significant need for nurses at the bedside, nurse educators, nurse leaders and nursing faculty. For someone who is interested in a clinical role with real relationships with patients, nursing provides a vast range of opportunities. Graduate degrees preparing nurse practitioners educate nurses to take on more autonomous roles. Nurse practitioners manage patients, provide primary to acute care and have prescriptive authority in all states. Nurses are in such high demand that often hospitals will provide financial support for their nurses to go on for a graduate degree. For those students with an interest in teaching, the impending nursing faculty shortage will result in many funding opportunities for doctoral study in nursing.

The 16-month accelerated BSN is offered for students with bachelor's degrees in fields other than nursing.

The Direct Entry to a Master's in Nursing is for people who already have a clear sense of the advanced practice role that they'd like to pursue, such as Nurse Practitioner, Nurse-Midwife or Nurse Anesthetist.

For students who clearly want to work in health care but not necessarily in a clinical role, Georgetown offers a Master's Degree in Health Systems Administration. This program is for individuals who aspire to be effective decision makers and to participate in developing health care systems that provide accessible and affordable high quality care. It is designed to educate health care professionals who can successfully move across the broad range of health services organizations and programs at progressively higher levels of managerial responsibility.

è 2. The University of Pittsburgh MD/PhD Program offers a 10-week summer research and enrichment program for underrepresented minority students interested in careers as physician scientists.

Summer Undergraduate Research Program for Minority Students

The Pittsburgh MD/PhD Program offers a 10-week summer research and enrichment program for underrepresented minority students interested in careers as physician scientists. The program is designed for students in their freshman, sophomore or junior years of college.

Description

Students receive intensive research laboratory experience and abundant mentorship. Every effort is made to match minority students with biomedical researchers in a variety of areas including, but not limited to: Medical Robotics, Transplantation Immunology, Neuroscience, Biomedical Informatics, and much more. Each student is also paired with a current MD/PhD student.

In addition, students participate in a variety of career development programs, scientific seminars, and specific career enhancement opportunities including preparation for national examinations. By the end of the summer, students are in a position to create a research poster for presentation at the MD/PhD Program retreat as well as at a national conference. Social activities are included in the program to help build a network of peers with similar career paths.

Funding

Students receive a stipend of $3,500 for the ten-week period plus round trip airfare. This stipend provides students with a comfortable budget to live in Pittsburgh. All students must have medical insurance for the duration of the program, and since they will be working with human materials, are encouraged to be vaccinated for hepatitis B.
