3.  The University of Michigan offers an 8-week Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) in Health Management and Policy.

Dear Colleagues:

I want to let you know about an exciting summer internship
opportunity for undergraduate students interested in health
disparities and health care. Many hospitals and other health
care organizations in the Detroit-Ann Arbor-Flint area have
agreed to provide paid ($3,000 for the summer) eight-week
summer internships in health management and policy to
qualified undergraduate students interested in the elimination
of racial/ethnic health disparities. These internships are
part of the University of Michigan's Summer Enrichment Program
(SEP) in Health Management and Policy. SEP, which will be
celebrating its 25th Anniversary this summer, is a program
within the Department of Health Management and Policy at the
University of Michigan's School of Public Health. SEP is
designed to familiarize undergraduate students with the
inequities in health status and health care that confront
communities of color across the United States. The program has
had great success in the past.

If there are students in your area who have a specific
interest in the health fields, management, policy, or any
career which will enable them to use their skills in a
socially meaningful way, I urge you to inform them about SEP.
Participating students will also receive housing, a food
allowance and travel expenses to and from Ann Arbor. Please
note that the application deadline is February 5, 2010. The
application is available on our website at:
http://www.sph.umich.edu/sep/ .

Also, feel free to contact Sha' Duncan Smith, Program
Coordinator, or me if you would like to discuss the Summer
Enrichment Program further; the number is (734) 936-3296 or
email us at um_sep@umich.edu< mailto:um_sep@umich.edu>.

6.  ===AAMC STAT===  News from the Association of American Medical Colleges, January 18, 2010.

AAMC STAT

•  AAMC, health groups oppose independent Medicare board
•  NIH releases reports on ARRA-funded projects
•  Majority of hospitals receive payments in quality program
•  Best practices for open records requests
•  New NIH funding opportunities for research
•  On the Move

AAMC, health groups oppose independent Medicare board

The AAMC joined 73 health care provider and advocacy groups in a Jan. 11 letter strongly urging Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to oppose the inclusion of an Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB) in the final health care reform legislation. The IPAB, included in the Senate-passed bill, would have broad authority to craft and execute new Medicare policies with limited Congressional input.

NIH releases reports on ARRA-funded projects

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) released a collection of reports online that explain the importance of research projects being funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).  The Recovery Act Investment Reports include 166 “plain language” reports describing work on roughly 2,000 ARRA projects that address specific diseases and other health-related topics.  More than 12,000 grants were awarded through ARRA.

Majority of hospitals receive payments in quality program

Data released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on hospitals participating in the hospital outpatient quality data program show that 97 percent met all program requirements and will receive the full 2009 payment.  Hospitals must submit data on seven quality performance measures in order to receive the full payment update.  All eligible hospitals on the AAMC Council of Teaching Hospitals (COTH) met the requirements and will be receiving their full payment update.  The lists of hospitals which will receive their payment update and those that will face a payment reduction are posted on the QualityNet web site.

Best practices for open records requests

The National Association for Biomedical Research (NABR) has released a guide of best practices for responding to open records requests from animal rights activists.  “Responding to FOIA Requests: Facts and Resources” contains information on institutions’ rights and responsibilities under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and suggestions for how researchers and universities should handle open records requests on both the federal and state levels.

New NIH funding opportunities for research

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced a new grant program that will offer short-term support for research projects in specific areas.  The “Recovery Act Limited Competition: NIH Director’s Opportunity for Research in Five Thematic Areas” will fund research on the application of genomics and other types of technology that allow quick, large-scale genetic, pharmacological, and biochemical testing; translation of science into new and better treatments; the use of science to enable health care reform; global health initiatives; and projects that will reinvigorate the biomedical research community.  Up to $80 million is expected to be available for awards.

On the Move

Eric Neilson, M.D., has announced he is stepping down from his role as chair of the department of medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.  Allen Kaiser, M.D., has been named interim vice chair.  Kaiser is currently vice chair for clinical affairs in the department of medicine and chief of staff for Vanderbilt University Hospital.

Academic Medicine online

Dr. Kanter invites creative, imaginative, innovative, and feasible responses to his 2010 Question of the Year: What are the most effective ways to make medical school tuition and fees free to students in exchange for public service?  Responses should be submitted in the form of a 750-word essay with no more than three references.  As many as five responses will be published in the journal.  To read more about the 2010 Question of the Year, see Dr. Kanter’s editorial in the January issue of Academic Medicine.  Other topics covered in this issue include managing conflicts of interest and the well-being of students and trainees at AHCs.

7.  The University of Southern California (USC) Somos Hermanos Student Immersion Program is currently accepting applications for both the July – December 2010 and January – June 2011 program sessions.

Dear Pre-Health Students,

The USC Somos Hermanos Student Immersion Program is currently accepting applications for both the July – December 2010 and January – June 2011 program sessions.

Somos Hermanos aims to reduce the health care disparity experienced by Latinos by increasing the number of bilingual, culturally competent Health care providers in the U.S.  The SIP is a six-month language and cultural immersion program based in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. The program combines intensive Spanish instruction, a comprehensive lecture series, socially and culturally relevant volunteer projects, weekly activities, and trips to El Salvador and Mexico to ensure our participants gain the language capability and cultural competency desperately needed to serve marginalized, Spanish-speaking Latino populations.

The SIP targets students who have completed their undergraduate education and are taking a year (or more) off before continuing on to graduate school in the health professions.  We accept students who will be attending graduate school for medicine, dentistry, nursing, psychology, physical therapy, public health, and other health-related fields.

“I went and saw my first patient a couple weeks ago and of course, he only spoke Spanish. I went into the room with a second year student I was paired with (and who did not know I spoke Spanish), and he proceeded to ask the patient the usual beginning questions. When I could tell that the patient did not understand him, I began translating the questions into Spanish and translating his responses into English to tell the second year student. Completely surprised at first by my fluency, the second year began telling me questions to ask him, which I did quite easily and effectively. I ended up translating both ways - the patient’s entire history and physical exam, without the aid of anything or anyone. This was exactly why I wanted to do Somos Hermanos, but I got that out of it, and so much more that I couldn’t have anticipated.”

- Quote from a past participant currently attending medical school in the US.

The application deadline for the Fall 2010 Session (July - December) is February 15th, 2010.
The application deadline for the Spring 2011 Session (January - June) is also February 15th, 2010.

For more information regarding our program, please visit our website at: www.somoshermanos.org, or e-mail us at info@somoshermanos.org.

We look forward to hearing from you soon,

11.  Most osteopathic medical schools have a February 1, 2010 deadline – a note from Gina Moses, M.Ed., Associate Director of Application Services.

Dear Advising Colleagues,

As many of you are aware, the nation’s 26 Osteopathic Medical Schools have rolling AACOMAS deadlines http://www.aacom.org/InfoFor/applicants/Pages/Instructions.aspx.  The majority of them have a February 1, 2010 deadline which is fast approaching.

In order to remind these applicants to complete their applications prior to the deadlines, we wanted to alert you that AACOMAS has sent out notifications to all of our pending applicants that have specified one or more of the Osteopathic Medical Schools that they are applying to. The next deadline is: February 1st (13 COMs).   We would like to ensure that everyone who would like to apply is clear about the timeframe they have left to have all of their requirements received by AACOMAS to start the verification process.

Fans of AACOM’s Facebook account will also receive updates – join us at: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Chevy-Chase-MD/AACOM-The-American-Association-of-Colleges-of-Osteopathic-Medicine/49933236324

Below is the exact wording of the email notification that was sent.

“Dear Applicant,

This is a courtesy reminder for your AACOMAS application. After review of our records, it appears that you are intending to apply to (Name of the Osteopathic Medical College) in which the deadline for submission of applications is February 1, 2010. At this time we have not received all the requirements (payment and/or transcripts) to begin processing your application. The normal verification processing timeframe is 4-6 weeks from the completion date of your application, although at this time, we have a processing time that is significantly lower.

The completion date is the date that all requirements have been received in-house by AACOMAS. If you still wish to apply please submit your application/requirements as soon as possible.  Note that February 1st is the date by which your application must be complete to AACOMAS.  It may still take several weeks before the application is verified and submitted to all of your colleges of choice.”
