2.  The University of Queensland School of Medicine Ochsner Clinical School is a new global model for medical schools.

Dear Student,

As the Australian school year begins in January 2012, our program is a desirable option for some students to consider, particularly those who are interested in a global experience at an outstanding medical school.

The University of Queensland School of Medicine Ochsner Clinical School is a new global model. The School offers two years of basic sciences at one of the world's most highly ranked universities in Brisbane, Australia and two years of clinical training at its U.S. Clinical School, which is one of the nation's most highly ranked integrated academic medical centers, located in New Orleans, LA.

The program is for students intending to practice medicine in the United States. It offers:

·         Two years of basic sciences at The University of Queensland School of Medicine in Brisbane, Australia

·         Two years of clinical training at The University of Queensland Ochsner Clinical School in New Orleans, Louisiana, the U.S. campus of The University of Queensland School of Medicine

·         PBL (Problem Based Learning) Curriculum with PBL groups of 10 in basic sciences and 5 in clinical training

·         Clinical exposure from year one forward

·         USMLE Preparation as part of the curriculum beginning in year one

·         Research opportunities on both campuses in both wet lab and clinical research settings

·         Rural and remote, urban, and suburban clinical settings on both campuses

·         Participation in Match Day and academic advising and support in the Match. Ochsner itself offers 70 residencies on a competitive basis

·         A January 2012 entry, the start of the Australian academic year, not a mid-year entry

·         Minimum requirements to apply: MCAT score of 8, 8, M, 8; a B average; and an earned B.A. or B.S. degree. (The average GPA of the 2011 entering class was 3.4, and the average MCAT was 29.)

·         Rolling admissions

·         U.S. Federal financial aid is available to students who qualify

3.  The Medical University of South Carolina announces a series of Fall 2011 Information sessions.

http://images.gotoextinguisher.com/client_id_1454/COL_HEALTH_4C.jpg

August 4, 2011

We are happy to announce the dates for our Fall 2011 Information Sessions held here in the College of Health Professions at the Medical University of South Carolina. These sessions are designed for any student who is interested in pursuing a career in the following areas:

Anesthesia for Nurses (CRNA)
Cardiovascular Perfusion
Health Administration
Occupational Therapy
Physical Therapy
Physician Assistant

At these sessions, our faculty and staff offer a comprehensive look at the admission process, financial aid,and prerequisite requirements for all of the listed programs. We provide an overview of all of the professions, and there are program specific breakout groups which allow each person the opportunity to speak with a faculty member from the program of interest. We will also be offering optional tours led by Student Ambassadors one hour before each information session. There is one session in each September, October, and November. As an academic advisor, you are also invited to attend these sessions either alone or with a group of interested students.

One of our greatest challenges is educating potential students (and advisors) about some of the exciting opportunities that exist in the healthcare field, other than medicine and nursing. It would be a tremendous help to us if you could post the attached flyer at the bottom of this email in key areas where students will see them.

Thank you in advance for your assistance with this effort and please feel free to contact us at (843) 792-3326 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting            (843) 792-3326      end_of_the_skype_highlighting or chpstusv@musc.edu if you have any questions. 6.  Marginalia 1:  NYC rationing toilet paper at Coney Island.

NOTE:   THE CITY CAN'T AFFORD TOILET PAPER BUT CAN AFFORD SOMEONE TO DISTRIBUTE IT!!!!

WHAT A COUNTRY!!!!

(Ed. Note:  The New York Post is rather tabloid in its reporting.  This story may not be true, but it makes great copy!!)

NYC rationing toilet paper at Coney Island

By RICH CALDER

Hey buddy, can you spare a square?

The city is so hard up for cash that it's rationing toilet paper in women's public restrooms -- to the point where bathroom attendants are doling out a few measly squares per patron -- along the world-famous Coney Island boardwalk.

The Post witnessed stone-faced Parks Department employees leave toilet-paper dispensers empty last week and instead force astonished female beachgoers to form "ration lines" in the bathrooms.

Regina Ballone, 25, of Brooklyn visited a boardwalk bathroom at West 16th Street Wednesday and was "grossed out" at the thought of someone else handling her toilet paper.

NO MORE! Regina Ballone (above) and Brittny Harrison can't believe workers are rationing toilet paper.

NO MORE! Regina Ballone (above) and Brittny Harrison can't believe workers are rationing toilet paper.

"Never in my life have I experienced anything like this," she said. "I walked toward a stall, and a bathroom attendant stopped me by shouting, 'Hey, mami! There's no toilet paper here,' and she whipped out a big roll for me to grab some."

Beachgoers also have been forced to line up for their paltry allotment of the city's cheap, single-ply toilet paper at the boardwalk's other women's restroom at Stillwell Avenue.

Benedikte Friis and Ann Damgaard, both 22, from Denmark, said they enjoyed visiting Coney Island last week -- except when it came to the bathrooms.

"It's very weird that someone decides how much paper you get because they don't know what situation you're in," said Friis, 22, laughing in disbelief. "You might need more!"

Toilet-paper rationing isn't an issue in the men's rooms -- but only because they apparently don't have any to ration. The toilet paper was gone whenever a The Post reporter went to inspect the men's rooms.

The Parks Department refused to say how much it budgeted for toilet paper and other supplies, with a spokeswoman saying only, "Bathroom supplies are stocked daily, and our budget for these supplies is consistent.

"There's no need to ration, and we'll make certain our staff does not do so," added the rep, Meghan Lalor.

But bathroom attendants privately insisted that the department isn't adequately stocking the boardwalk with enough bathroom supplies, which is why they are forced to ration what they have.

Dianna Carlin, owner of the Lola Star Boutique, said the bathrooms should be in better shape considering boardwalk merchants agreed to pay the city fees this summer to keep them open longer.

"I gave $1,000 but would've been better off buying $1,000 worth of toilet paper and dropping it off," she said.
