By shape
- Squamous: thin & flattened
- Cuboidal: Short cylinders that from the side appear cube-shaped
- Columnar: Look like columns or cylinders
By layering
- Simple: One layer of cells
- Stratified: Two or more layers, one stacked above the basement layer.
- Pseudostratified: One layer, but irregular lengths.
