In all cases…
  • CBU students gain their acceptances the OLD FASHIONED WAY:  THEY EARN THEM.
6
Application portfolios have 4 components:
  • GPA:  How you do in your classes.  (Looking for consistency)
  • National exam performance:  How you do on national exam, compared to your peers.  (MCAT, DAT, PCAT, OAT)
  • Recommendations:  What your professors, mentors, supervisors say about you.
  • “That special something”, i.e. how do you stand out from the crowd?
7
If it were that easy, everybody would be doing it.

What I do as Director
  • Collect information regarding health-related graduate programs, prerequisites, trends;
  • Share that information via Caduceus Newsletter, Health Careers, or periodic e-mails;
  • Schedule special presentations;
  • Help applicants walk through process
11
Procedure for getting evaluations & LORs differ
  • An increasing number of professional schools are using web-based evaluation forms.
    • You tell them the names & e-mail addresses of references;
    • They contact the individual(s) directly
  • “Default” is to submit an evaluation request form to me.
12
In the Evaluation Request Form, I ask the following information
  • Your name, major, University ID #, e-mail address, what program you’re applying to;
  • Whether you choose to retain or waive your right of review;
  • Names, physical & e-mail addresses of people who you want to write LORs;
  • Names, physical & e-mail addresses of programs to which you’re applying.
13
Most admissions committees prefer a composite faculty evaluation
  • I distribute evaluation forms, with a request for a supplemental LOR, to people you specify;
  • I compile a composite evaluation;
  • I send the composite evaluation & LORs as a single PDF file to schools you specify.
    • For medical schools, I have to wait until you inform me of secondary application forms.
14
Some health-related graduate programs require a LOR from a practicing professional
  • Optometry
  • Osteopathic medicine
  • Podiatry
15
Most, if not all, like to see some clinical experience
  • Volunteer
    • E.g. Experience Critical program of hospitals in the Baptist system
    • You’re not expected to engage in work throughout college career – that would be unreasonable.
  • Paid
    • E.g. Church Health Center, Hope and Healing Center internships.
