Succession: Replacement of one community of organisms by another

Two types of succession

Circumstances which can promote primary succession

Steps involved in primary succession in a temperate habitat

Circumstances which promote secondary succession

Steps involved in secondary succession

A typical sequence in a temperate habitat would include the following:

Over time, it would look something like this:

Aquatic habitats will also undergo succession

The lake becomes more shallow, less water volume, increased fertilization.

Over time, the pond will fill in, to eventually become a marsh or meadow

We engage in activities which will either accelerate or retard, or even reverse succession.
