Corequisite: CS 234. 1 credit. Text "Objects, Abstraction, Data Structures and Design Using Java", E. Koffman & P. Wolfgang, Wiley, 2005 Prerequisites You must have fundamental skills in problem solving, objected oriented design, algorithms and a working knowledge of Java or C++. Goals You will learn basic concepts of abstract data types, algorithms, recursion and classes in Java. You will improve your skills in design and problem solving in computer science and will implement designs in Java. Syllabus Tentative topics for labs Phone directory Digital lock Polynomial Infix to postfix converter with a stack Parser for arithmetic expressions Recursion Knight's tour Arithmetic expressions with binary tress Student clubs Individual lab(s) Total 15 Grades Grades are based on labs and a lab final. Each lab consists of an individual design, perhaps a group design and an implementation in Java. The Java code must follow specified standards. You should submit work on time and in a specified format. You must submit your own work for an individual design or code or the work of your team for group design or code. Your team may have to meet with the instructor for the purpose of assessment of an implementation. At least one lab will be individual work. If you do not pass the course, then you will not pass the lab. Weights You choose your personal weights for labs and the final, subject to certain restrictions. Labs count between 65% and 85% of the total grade. Designs count for one half of the grade for labs. The lab final counts between 15% and 35% of the total grade. The sum of the two weights must be 100%. You will choose your weights after the first test. You can not change your weights after you choose them. Grading Scale A 90-100%, B 80-89%, C 65-79%, D 60-64%, F 0-59%. Attendance You must attend class regularly. Lateness counts as half an absence. CBU's catalog states 'any student who has missed a total of approximately 20% of class time may be given a grade of F.'
