Math 131 Calculus I Homework Guidelines You should do all the assigned homework, even the problems I do not collect and grade. Uncollected assigned homework is a good source of test problems. Mathematics is not a spectator sport. You learn math by doing math problems. When I ask you to turn in homework, please observe the following rules. If you fail to comply with these rules, then I may assign a grade of zero or I may deduct points. These rules exist to help me grade and to help you learn. 1. Use standard 8.5" by 11" paper. 2. Write legibly in pencil. 3. Write your first and last name, Math 131 and the assignment number in the upper left-hand corner. 4. State the problem. You need not copy the problem but you must write in English what to do in order to solve the problem. 5. Show all necessary work providing clear, concise explanations. I do not recommend turning in your first draft. I do encourage the use of scrap paper and the use of revisions. Please take some pride in your work. Your work should impress me. The work you turn in should be neat and organized. 6. When you use equations, make sure that they are complete mathematical sentences. For example, the equation y = 131 x - 2004 has as its subject the variable y, as its verb the equals sign and as its object the expression 131 x - 2004. A common error that some students make is to to forget or to misuse the equals sign. 7. Show all necessary work, even if you "do it in your head". Homework is written communication. I will probably never learn how to read minds. I can not read between the lines. Often you will need to use complete English sentences to explain your work. All of the examples in the textbook explain the equations with English sentences. Sometimes a graph occurs. 8. Please be neat. Use a ruler or straightedge to draw straight lines. Use quadrille or graph paper for all graphs. Label the axes, the scale marks and some of the plotted points. 9. Staple all sheets together. 10. You should submit an assignment on the due date before I begin class. Place it on the lectern or table that I designate. 11. You can work with other students on homework assignments, but you can not copy another student's solution. You can consult with the tutors in the Math Center or with the instructor on homework. I reserve the right to penalize plagiarism. My working assumption is that you are honest and that you will submit your own work.
