Topics include functions, the derivative & its interpretations, the definite integral & its interpretations, the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, rules of differentiation, applications of the derivative and antiderivatives. The course uses a graphical, numerical and algebraic approach for each concept. Prerequisite: Math 117 or equivalent Text "Calculus", Hughes-Hallett, 4th edition, Wiley, 2005. Required You must use a graphing calculator, such as the TI89, Calculator in class, on assignments and occasionally on tests. Prerequisites You must have basic skills in algebra, trigonometry, functions and problem solving. Goals You will learn basic concepts of differentiation and integration. You will solve applied problems with the tools of calculus. Tests consist of 4 hour exams (20%) and a comprehensive departmental final (20%). There are no makeups or incompletes. Each test and the final may have a calculator free part. Assignments include graded written homework due at the start of each class, nearly daily quizzes, WebCT quizzes (30%) and graded group lab work (30%). You must submit assignments on time and in a specified format. Some assignments involve writing short essays. You must submit your own work on daily assignments. To pass the course, you must pass each of tests and assignments. Grading Scale A 90-100%, B 80-89%, C 65-79%, D 60-64%, F 0-59%. Attendance You must attend class regularly.
