Black History Month

A collaboration of CBU student organizations to create an educational celebration of diversity and culture. Throughout this month, at each event, we will be recording videos and taking pictures of students telling us "I Love My Melanin Because…" They will be compiled them into a video for the closing ceremony.

February 1

Black History Month Opening Ceremony
Sabbatini Lounge - 7:00 p.m.
The CBU Black Student Association hosts a social mixer that is open to all student, faculty, and staff as a semi-formal kickoff for Black History Month.

February 3

Phi Beta Sigma: Dashiki Mixer
Sabbatini Lounge - 7:00 p.m.
Phi Beta Sigma hosts a Black History Month mixer where light refreshments will be provided. The aim of this event is to enlighten the CBU population of the different African cultures in the sense of dressing styles and heritage. Dashikis will be for sale prior to the event, so if you do not have one this would the perfect time to get one for this event. The preferred dress attire is African patterns or colors (dashikis). If not available, please come in formal attire.

Black Student Association Hot Wings and Hot Topics
Spain Auditorium - 6:00 p.m.
This event invites students to have an open forum to discuss hot topics that can negatively affect the African American community. Topics will include gentrification, mental health, and statues.

February 6

Zeta Phi Beta: Trap Karaoke
Wilson Family Commons, LLC - 6:00 p.m.
A night of fun and music. A karaoke session where the song selections will consist of appropriate “trap” songs. Get ready for a night of fun and laughs.

February 7

NPHC: Black Professionals Meeting
Spain Auditorium - 6:30 p.m.
Professionals will be invited to speak on a panel to shed light on how their college career impacted their career choice and the professional career they currently serve in.

February 8

Alpha Kappa Alpha: My African Roots
Sabbatini Lounge - 7:08 p.m.
This event will highlight the beauties of an African culture. It will include a presentation and activities that will inform attendees.

February 9

NSBE: West African Delights
LLC Classroom - 5:00 p.m.
Cooking traditional west African food such as jollof rice and lime.

February 12

Phi Beta Sigma: I AM Protest
Buckman Quad - 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Event to educate the CBU population on historical black figures that shaped America and had major impacts during the Civil Right Movement. The goal is to bring light to those who are not as widely known.

February 13

Black Student Association: Jeopardy (Black History Edition)                 
Spain Auditorium  - 6:00 p.m.
This night will be filled with learning and promoting knowledge about Black History. Students will be put into teams of 2 and will compete to win Black History Jeopardy.

February 15

Alpha Phi Alpha: #StayWoke Kemet-ian Knowledge
Spain Auditorium - 6:06 p.m.
Part of a three-part #StayWoke event compilation. The Kemet-ian Knowledge is focused on teaching and informing attendees about Ancient Egypt and its culture. How a civilization our civilization, went from Kings to Slaves. Focused on teaching history rather than conspiracies.

February 16

Black Student Association: Professional Headshots
Sabbatini Lounge - 12:00-1:00 p.m.
Students will be given the opportunity to have their headshots taken for free. These headshots can be used for students LinkedIn profile. We will also be helping students with resumes and LinkedIn profiles, preparing them for the upcoming Career Expo on February 20.

Location TBA - 9:30 a.m.
Be on the lookout for this raffle to win tickets to go to the February 17 showing of Black Panther at 9:30 a.m.

Student Life Raffle: The Color Purple
Orpheum Theatre – 2:00 p.m.
Be on the lookout for this raffle to win tickets to go to the February 17 matinee performance of The Color Purple at 2:00 p.m.

Sigma Gamma Rho: Soul Sister Sunday
Sabbatini Lounge - 6:22 p.m.
This event is to encourage women’s empowerment. This event will uplift women of all different backgrounds and gather speakers to share their individual stories. Dinner will be served.

NSBE: African Crafts
Cooper-Wilson Center 320 - 6:00 p.m.
National Society of Black Engineers hosts this activity making a patchwork quilt. This is something that slaves used to do in order to know which directions they needed to run. Each organization present can make their own patch and then sew it together.

February 21

Alpha Kappa Alpha: Hollywood Library Service
Hollywood Library (1530 N Hollywood St) - 4:00  p.m.
Join Alpha Kappa Alpha at Hollywood Library to help students in an after-school program.

February 22

BSA and NAACP: Blackout Basketball Game
Canale Arena - Women's game at 5:00 p.m. / Men's game at 7:00 p.m.
A fundraiser basketball game where all proceeds will go to benefit victims of the Flint Water Crisis. “I Stand With Flint” wristbands will be to every person who donates, and “I Stand With Flint” t-shirts will also be available for giveaway. Students are encouraged  to wear all black and cheer on our Bucs to victory versus Union University.

Come out and show off your talents — Poetry, Music, Singing, Dancing, or any Open Mic performance!

February 24

Student Life Raffle: Hattiloo Theatre
Hattiloo Theatre (37 Cooper St) - 2:00 p.m.
Be on the lookout for this raffle to win tickets to see “Selma: A Musical Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” at Hattiloo Theatre starting at 2:00 p.m.

NAACP Trailblazer Awards
University Theater - 6:30 p.m.
Annual NAACP awards ceremony honoring members of the Memphis community and students at Christian Brothers University who have blazed a trail.

Spain Auditorium - 6:00 p.m.
Zeta Phi Beta hosts a forum/panel event focused on discussing the importance of mental and physical health of African American women. Undergraduate students and professional women will be sharing their experiences.

Sigma Gamma Rho: Study Session
Rosa Deal 213 - 6:22 p.m.
Study session for students who need a nice, peaceful atmosphere to study for approaching midterms.

Black History Month Closing Ceremony
Sabbatini Lounge - 6:00 p.m.
Closing event for an amazing month of education, service, and excellence. There will be a potluck style dinner where each organization will bring a dish. A night full of fun, reflection, and laughter.
