MEMPHIS — The Christian Brothers University Bucs clinched the top seed in next month's Gulf South Conference Tournament with a 3-0 win over Shorter on Senior Day Sunday afternoon at Signaigo Field.
Diego Silva Vieira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Pitagoras) gave the Bucs (13-2, 7-1 GSC) the only goal they would need in the 25th minute. After a dangerous cross, the Hawks' defense attempted to clear the ball, but they sent it directly to Silva Vieira at the top of the 18-yard box. He fired a quick shot into the right side of the net, and the Bucs led 1-0.
After Britton McGuire (Memphis, Tenn./Memphis University School) made several spectacular saves, five in all, to preserve the Bucs' 1-0 lead, Brendan Bennett (Belfast, Northern Ireland/St. Mary's Christian Brothers Grammar School) added a goal to the lead in the 72nd minute. After the Hawks (6-9-1, 4-4) saved his first shot, Bennett followed with a volley into the net on the rebound. Andres Gil (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Instituto River Plate) set the final margin when he scored his first goal of the season in the 86th minute as he gathered a cross from Samuel Wilson (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) and found the net.
The Bucs out-shot the Hawks 19-12 for the game, including a 9-5 edge in shots on goal.
With the win, the Bucs move into sole possession of first place in the GSC with 21 points. No. 22 Alabama-Huntsville holds second place with 18 points, but with one game left, UAH can only tie CBU and the Bucs own the tiebreaker by virtue of a 1-0 win over UAH Oct. 3.
The Bucs wrap up the GSC season Friday night at 7:15 p.m. as they visit Union. As the top seed in the GSC Tournament, they will play in Pensacola, Fla., Friday, Nov. 7.
