Campus Prepares to Welcome New and Returning Students to Campus Next Weekend

MEMPHIS, TN — Next weekend, over 330 new students will arrive with their families on campus to begin an exciting chapter of life at Christian Brothers University (CBU). During the three-day program, incoming freshmen will move throughout campus attending dozens of programs hosted by various departments around CBU. This year’s Welcome Back Weekend schedule will include information sessions, tours, meetings, and other fun activities intended to foster community among first-year students and familiarize them with CBU.

While the weekend’s activities fulfill some very practical needs (moving into residence halls, attending necessary information sessions to navigate the first year, learning for parents), it’s also a chance for returning students to create an inviting space for new students in the CBU community. This takes place through all-student events like BUCFest, which will incorporate live music, carnival activities, and, of course, food, on Saturday, August 20. For fourth-year student Sushma Kalava, who is working alongside the Campus Life staff to plan Welcome Back Weekend, events like these are so beneficial because they help to re-define what life on campus can look like.

“I hope that Welcome Back Weekend inspires students of all years to get involved and stay involved. I want to help the commuters especially to realize that there is something to stick around for after classes are over.”

As the many departments and organizations around campus finalize the logistics for Welcome Back Weekend to ensure that first-year students have all the necessary information communicated to them, the mission remains steadfastly tied to the cultivation of community that happens each year.

“We’re helping our students lay the foundations of friendships that will last for a lifetime and memories that will endure even longer,” remarks Director of Student Activities Zach Knight.  “We’re so excited that we get the opportunity to be a part of that.”
