Last month, the CBU community mourned the loss of retired business professor Dr. John Edward Megley III. Dr. Megley passed away on November 8 after a six-year battle with lung cancer. He was 84.
Dr. Megley was born in Avon, Massachusetts to John Edward Megley Jr and Anna Feeley. John separated from the U.S. Army in 1952 as a lieutenant. He attended the University of Illinois-Champaign and received a BA in Biochemistry. After completing his undergraduate degree, Megley worked for Encyclopedia Americana as an editor, and later at Abbott Laboratories as a cancer researcher in the Chicago area later. He subsequently received an MBA from Roosevelt University in Chicago, a PhD in Management/Labor Studies from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and a BSBA with an emphasis in Accounting from Christian Brothers University.
Dr. Megley arrived in Memphis in 1990 to take a positon at the CBU School of Business. During his tenure, he served in a variety of capacities, including professor of management, chairman of the Department of Management, Marketing, and Economics, and director of the graduate programs in Business Administration. Additionally, Megley was a labor arbitrator listed with the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.
CBU professor in the School of Business remember him in this way:
“Although not in his academic department, I worked with Dr. Megley from 1999 until he retired. He taught several labor classes with me on Saturday mornings, and he didn’t complain about the schedule. He was very gracious in sharing his knowledge of negotiation and guidelines for working with unions, particularly construction arbitration and negotiation. The students seemed to appreciate his attention to detail as to locality and type of labor contracts, too. As a less experienced mediator, I appreciated the opportunity I had to observe him as both a mediator and arbitrator. Even in continuing education, he was very good at supplementing the instructor’s points, and I enjoyed attending the classes with him and as well as hearing his discussion afterward. He was an outstanding mentor, and I had hoped to follow his lead into arbitration. He was most attentive and concerned that everyone be given a fair hearing and in arbitration, he took his writing of opinions very seriously and was extremely conscientious in his findings.”
-Dr. Sarah Pitts
“Dr. Megley was a great department chair for a new, uncertain faculty member. Back in 2003, he tried to talk me into teaching business statistics… if only I’d listened!”
-Dr. Kristen Prien
