Facts about CLEP

  • Website: clep.collegeboard.org
  • Cost: $100 plus an administration fee determined by testing center
  • Veterans can be reimbursed; Click here for info >  
  • Active-duty military personnel, spouses of some military personnel, and some civilian armed forces employees may receive funding for exams.  Click here for info >  
  • DANTES funding will not apply to retesting on previously funded CLEP exams., but individuals may personally pay to retake an exam
  • The same test may not be repeated within 3 months (CLEP policy)
  • “Rights-only” scoring: no penalty for guessing
  • Exams last 90 minutes and are mostly multiple choice (except English Comp w/ essay)
  • English Comp is the only test that requires an essay, but some colleges require essays on other tests; these are graded by faculty at the school
  • Scores on non-essay tests are provided instantly
  • Transcripts for non-military-based tests requested after initial test date are $20 each; scores kept on file for 20 years; Click here for details >
