Education

For more than 140 years, Christian Brothers University has played a vital role in helping teachers make a difference in the lives of children. The University’s legacy of teaching goes back even further than that; the founder of the Christian Brothers order, St. John Baptist de La Salle, is the Patron Saint of teachers.??

Educators prepared at CBU are teachers who lead and serve. Today, CBU continues to offer programs that meet the needs of educators and help teachers and leaders make a difference.

In keeping with the longstanding Lasallian tradition of teaching excellence, the Department of Education offers undergraduate and graduate programs to prepare students for initial teaching licensure and also graduate programs for those already licensed and experienced as teachers.

The NCATE/ CAEP visit occurred April 21-23, 2015. Results of the findings indicated that the CBU Department of Education has met all 6 NCATE standards. Full accreditation decisions were made public in the fall of 2015. As part of our on-going accreditation, CAEP requires universities to post candidate scores for public information. Christian Brothers University offers two teacher residency models, LANCE (Lasallian Association of New Catholic Educators) and LEaPS (Lasallian Educators and Professional Scholars). Both residencies are innovative two-year post-graduate service programs that seek to develop a corps of highly motivated and committed educators to meet the needs of children in Memphis area elementary and secondary schools.

Tuition for these program participants is 100% subsidized. Teachers live in community on the CBU campus throughout the program and receive a stipend for their teaching.

During the school year, teachers serve as full-time teachers in Catholic, charter or public schools. Courses are completed through intensive on-campus study during the summer and evenings during the school year.
