Reporting Obligations

CBU must publically disclose accurate statistics of all reported crimes to comply with the Clery Act. However, community members reporting sexual misconduct that may be criminal have the option to remain completely anonymous if they report incidents through a professionally licensed counselor. That person, either on or off campus, will inform the Campus Police & Safety Office that an incident has occurred and that department will record it appropriately for the annual campus crime report if it occurred on CBU administered property.

To Report Confidentially

If you desire that details of any sexual misconduct be kept confidential, speak with the on-campus licensed professional counselor or off-campus rape crisis resources who can maintain confidentiality.  Our LPC is available to help you free of charge, and can be seen on an emergency basis.  In addition, you may speak off-campus with members of the clergy and chaplains, who will also keep reports made to them confidential. Contact information for on and off-campus resources include:

Non-confidential reporting options  

CBU encourages reporting all possible violations of its policies governing appropriate sexual conduct and will seek to balance the outcomes desired by the reporting parties with protecting the interests of the campus community. All employees of the university except the licensed counselors performing their therapeutic duties are mandatory reporters.  Once aware of potential violations, must inform appropriate officials. While individual privacy will be respected as much as possible, mandatory reporters cannot promise confidentiality nor a guaranteed outcome of any investigatory process to someone who discloses information regarding possible sexual misbehavior.

You have the right and can expect to have incidents of sexual misconduct to be taken seriously by the institution when formally reported, and to have those incidents investigated and properly resolved through administrative procedures.  Formal reporting means that only people who need to know will be told and information will be shared only as necessary with investigators, witnesses, and the accused individual.
