Dr. Dennis Merat
Title: Associate Professor of Chemistry, and current Chair of the Chemistry Department.
Length of service at CBU: Dr. Merat has been teaching at CBU since 1998.
Courses regularly taught: CHEM 101 (Introduction to College Chemsitry); CHEM 113 and CHEM 113L (Principles of Chemistry I and lab); CHEM 114 and CHEM 114L (Principles of Chemistry II and lab); CHEM 315 and CHEM 315L (Biochemistry I and lab); CHEM 316 (Biochemistry II)..
Formal Education: Dr. Merat has a B.S. in Chemistry from Southern Methodist University and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Texas A&M University.
Research interests: Dr. Merat’s research interests include: 1) Isolation and characterization of possible calcium-binding proteins from soft plant tissues, including fruit produced by Actinidia deliciosa and by species belonging to the genus Ilex and 2) Investigation of possible roles for calcium-binding proteins in the maturation of fruit of species belonging to the genus Ilex.
Service: Dr. Merat is the Chair of the Department of Chemistry and has served on a number of CBU committees, including the General Education Implementation Committee and the initial committee for development of the Bioinformatics course and program. He is the current advisor for both the CBU Student Members of the American Chemical Society and the new CBU Biochemistry Club. Dr. Merat has served on the Awards Committee and as Chair of the Memphis Section of the American Chemical Society and on the Executive Committee of the Southeastern Regional Meeting Board of the American Chemical Society. He was the General Chair in overall charge of the Combined 71st Southwest Regional Meeting/67th Southeastern Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society in 2015. Dr. Merat is the current Fair Director for the INTEL affiliated regional Memphis-Shelby County Science and Engineering Fair and is also the current Chemistry Olympiad Coordinator for the Memphis Section of the American Chemical Society.
