MEMPHIS, TN — Christian Brothers University (CBU) is taking a bold step toward long-term sustainability and innovation by announcing a Letter of Intent (LOI) to explore a formal partnership with Lewis University, a fellow Catholic and Lasallian institution located in Illinois.
The LOI marks the beginning of a collaborative planning process, signaling a mutual intention to explore a new path ahead.
“This process is about envisioning what’s possible at CBU — academically, financially, and in how we serve our students and city,” said Brother Chris Englert, FSC, Interim President of CBU. “By considering a partnership with Lewis, we’re taking a step toward a stronger, more sustainable future while remaining rooted in our faith in God and the Lasallian mission that has guided us for more than 150 years.”
A VISION FOR A NEW CBU
CBU aims to bolster its position as a premier institution serving the greater Memphis region and beyond by aligning academic programs with workforce needs and adopting a financially sustainable model.
This new CBU would strengthen its ability to meet the needs of today’s learners and tomorrow’s leaders by:
- Offering new high-demand programs in aviation, business, engineering, healthcare, and technology
- Creating stronger pathways for commuters, adult learners, and transfer, international, traditional, and graduate students
- Growing online and hybrid course offerings to increase accessibility and flexibility for traditional and non-traditional students
- Extending the reach of both CBU and Lewis University into new markets through academic innovation
MISSION-DRIVEN RESPONSE TO A SHIFTING LANDSCAPE
Over the past year, CBU has taken strategic steps to improve its financial position, including reducing expenses and boosting fundraising. These efforts reflect a renewed focus on sustainability and continued academic success.
Yet like most institutions nationwide, CBU continues to navigate significant challenges:
- Declining college-age populations, especially after the 2007 recession
- Post-pandemic enrollment trends
- Inflation and the potential stress on future students and families
- Uncertainties in federal aid and international recruitment
External pressures are certainly a factor; however, this is not just about reacting to them. It is about evolving intentionally while recognizing that tough decisions still lie ahead, so that we can strengthen our foundation and address the real needs of today’s students.
WHY LEWIS UNIVERSITY?
This partnership is meant to elevate both institutions’ ability to meet regional and national needs. Located in Romeoville, Illinois — 35 miles southwest of Chicago — Lewis University has grown significantly, serving nearly 8,000 students. With eighty undergraduate majors, over 35 graduate programs, and a shared Catholic and Lasallian mission, Lewis brings strong momentum and is an ideal fit.
“With Memphis being home to industry leaders in distribution, engineering, transportation, technology, and healthcare, this potential partnership allows us to explore new ways to meet regional needs,” said Dr. David Livingston, President of Lewis University. “By leveraging our complementary strengths, we believe there is potential to extend the impact of the Lasallian mission beyond what either of us could achieve alone.”
WHAT’S NEXT?
No immediate changes to academic programs are planned, and we expect the upcoming school year to proceed as usual with our scheduled academic offerings. The LOI marks the first step in a careful, intentional and shared process.
Both institutions will begin a comprehensive evaluation to explore opportunities, address challenges, and shape a future built on their combined strengths. Forums, listening sessions, and strategic planning will help determine the most beneficial path. A decision on whether to proceed with a full agreement is expected this coming fall.
